Sonepat, January 16
The Director General of Haryana Police, Dr M S Malik, laid the foundation stone of Behan Subhashni Devi Law College on the premises of the Kanya Gurukul at Khanpur Kalan village about 30 km from here.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that providing knowledge of law to the women will certainly help in checking the crimes against women.

The state government, he said, was giving priority to the women education in the state and it was a step towards women empowerment. Educating a woman resulted in educating two families.

Recognising the fact, the Union Government has approved the proposal of the state government for implementing the national programme for education of girls at elementary level.

He disclosed that as many as 38 educationally backward blocks of 10 districts have been identified for this purpose.

During the first two months of the current financial year, a sum of Rs 1 crore had been spent for the implementation of this project.

In the first phase, one additional classroom, a toilet, drinking water and electrification facilities would be provided in these blocks.

The project, he said, was aimed at ensuring the participation of women in the education. Inputs provided under the project will help improve the quality of women education and the grassroot level planning for the villages will be based on door-to-door survey, he added.

Mr Malik said that our country is famous for its justice system for ages and the Indian women, he said, help their husbands reach the ultimate justice.

He also cited the example of Noorjahan, wife of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Protecting human rights was a priority in law and law is one of the four recognised estates in our Constitution.

Dr Malik praised the progress achieved by the Gurukul institutions in educating the women. The law college, he said, was unique and first of its kind in the country.

He also suggested ultra modern courses besides three-year and five-year LLB courses like PG diploma in human rights, cyber laws, information technology (IT) and law and income tax laws.
