St Thomas boys win chess title

Ludhiana, January 16
Boys from St Thomas Senior Secondary School proved their supremacy over their opponents from Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, to annex the title in the third Sahodaya schools chess championship that concluded on the St Thomas school campus here today. The host team, comprising Divjyot Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Madhur Gupta, Nitin Sharma, Sumit Madan and Sachin Garg, got the better of the KVM School team comprising Nippun Makkar, Vikas Bansal, Mudit Dhir and Aashish Seth. The third spot was bagged by the team from GGN Public School, Civil Lines, comprising Gursharanjit Singh, Amandeep Singh, Captain Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Parminder Singh and Manpreet Singh. In the girls’ section, BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, clinched the title. In the final, the BCM girls’ team of Jaspreet, Jaspriya, Priyanka, Puneet, Pooja and Arti defeated the team from USPC Jain School, consisting of Sandhleen, Manpreet, Rubal, Vinita, Vishaily and Ravneet. The girls’ team from Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, comprising Ila Chawla, Disha R. Gupta, Manvi Chawla, Arushi Jain, Prabhjot Kaur and Justina Joseph, had to be content with the third spot. Mr Sanjay Talwar, councillor, Municipal Corporation, and a trustee of the Improvement Trust, Ludhiana, gave away the prizes. Ms H. The eighth edition of the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Cricket Tournament will be held here at the Daresi Ground from January 17 to 25. According to Mr Baboo Walia, organiser of this prize money tournament, 16 teams had confirmed their participation in the tournament. The winners would be richer by Rs 5,100 while the runner-up would get a cash prize of Rs 3,100, Mr Walia informed. Khanna
Kabaddi tourney:
The Second Nimma Memorial International Kabaddi Cup will be organised in the first week of February by Nirmal Singh Nimma Memorial Kabaddi Club in association with the A. S. High School Trust and Management Society. Mr Inder Jit Singh , vice-president, and Dr Somesh Batta, press secretary, of the club said here yesterday that Rs1 lakh would be given to the winner of the Cup while Rs 75,000 would be given to the runner-up. They said Rs 20,000 would be given to each participating team. The tournament would be held at A. S. Senior Secondary School.
