CM demands 6 parliamentary seats in Haryana Gurgaon, January 12 Well-placed sources said Mr Parkash Singh Badal, SAD president, was instrumental in clearing the doubts in the minds of the senior BJP leaders with regard to the INLD for the parliamentary election. The Congress is said to be finding it hard to come up with a strategy to meet the INLD-BJP challenge. According to observers, it is plagued by internecine struggle among various factional leaders. Many of the senior leaders in the party want a change in the state leadership before the Lok Sabha elections. Many of the leaders opposed to the president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC), Mr Bhajan Lal, are from the non-Jat sections. They have met the party
chief, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, a number of times on the issue. They also want that Mr Bhajan Lal being the tallest leader in the Haryana unit of the party should contest the Bhiwani Lok Sabha seat. The Bhiwani seat is presently represented by Mr Ajay Singh of the INLD. Bhiwani is the home district of Mr Bansi Lal and his son Surender Singh earlier represented the seat. Adampur Assembly segment represented by Mr Bhajan Lal falls in the Bhiwani parliamentary
seat. Ever since Mr Bansi Lal quit the Congress Bhiwani has perhaps emerged as the weakest parliamentary
constituency for the Congress. Just like the Congress the Haryana unit of the BJP is confused as its leaders still see an outside chance of its Central leadership severing ties with the INLD. The state unit of the BJP will organise a public meeting at Jind on March 14 and moves are on to bring Mr Vajpayee to address it. According to sources, Mr Om Prakash Chautala has asked the BJP leadership for
Hisar, Kurukshetra, Sirsa, Bhiwani and Rohtak seats. However, BJP leaders are said to be against the style of functioning of Mr Chautala. They have repeatedly alleged to the Central leaders of the BJP that he was trying to erode the base of the party. The sources said the animosity on both sides in the state had come to such a pass that in the last meeting of the NDA allies held on January 8 Mr Chautala preferred to send his son Ajay Singh to attend it. He attended the same after Mr Pramod Mahajan rang him and urged him to do so. In the telephonic conversation Mr Chautala is said to have expressed annoyance at the negative utterances of the state leaders of the BJP. Mr Chautala attended the meeting only after he was assured that there was no move to change NDA’s relationship with the INLD. |
Assembly poll in 2005, says CM Sonepat, January 12 Addressing party workers here last evening, he said his party was in favour of a strong government at the Centre. Asked about the views of his party workers’ regarding alliance, he said the party should be strong as to attend other parties to join it. Mr Hawa Singh
Bohoat, leader of Backward Classes cell of the Congress, announced his decision to join the INLD and expressed faith in the policies of the party. |
Assembly election after full term: Chautala Ambala, January 12 Talking to media persons here after addressing a workers' meeting in Panchayat Bhavan, Mr Chautala said that on the issue of alliance with the BJP, the ball is in the BJP's court. "The BJP has to decide now whether they want to contest the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the INLD," he said. Mr Chautala said that the INLD had honoured the alliance but the state leaders of the BJP had constantly criticised the INLD. "We have no objection if the BJP wants to contest the election alone," he said. The Lok Sabha elections might be held in March or May," he added. He said that the INLD was ready to contest the Lok Sabha elections. "We have always honoured the decision of the electorate," he said. To a query, Mr Chautala said that Congress leaders who were referring to the north-south Haryana issue lack maturity. "For the first time, the INLD held the Sarkar Apke Dwar programme in each and every area. Also, the number of people who attended the Congress rallies was less than our workers' meeting," he stated. He said that the Budget session of the Haryana Assembly would take place as scheduled. "We are working on a major plan for expressway since most of the vehicles headed for Delhi pass through Haryana," he said. Among others, Mr Jasbir
Mallour, Mr Anil Vij, Mr Faqir Chand Mullana, Mr Balwant Singh, Mr Pawan Diwan, Mr DD Gautam and Mr Mohd Akil were present. |
Congress plans jan sabhas in constituencies Ambala, January 12 Talking to mediapersons here today, Mr Malik said that political developments were taking place at quick pace. “The Congress is in a strong position in Haryana and we are going to do well in the Lok Sabha elections,” he claimed. Mr Malik said that the INLD as well as the BJP had failed to live up to the expectations of the people. “Even it is not clear who has carried out some development as both the parties are trying to take the credit,” he said. To a query, Mr Malik said that in his opinion the Haryana Assembly poll may take place along with the Lok Sabha elections. “Although Mr Om Prakash Chautala is saying that there is going to be a full term, I believe that they are preparing for the Lok Sabha as well as Vidhan Sabha poll. While the BJP has no base in Haryana, there is resentment against Mr Chautala,” he said. He observed that law and order had deteriorated in Haryana. “The shootout in the court complex in Gurgaon, in which a constable was killed, shows lack of policing. People are feeling unsafe,” he said. Mr Malik stated that some of the issues which were going to be of importance in the Assembly polls were SYL canal, lack of availability of water, power tariff, electronic meters, regularisation of unauthorised colonies, reinstatement of retrenched employees, end the VAT, improved law and order and governance according to people’s interest. He admitted that the “hisab chukao” rally was an act of indiscipline. “Such incidents cause harm to the party. However, a rally should be held for the interest of the people,” he said. Among others, Dr Viresh
Shandilya, Mr Kulwant Singh Manakpur, Mr Mohan Lal Ghel and Subedar Atar Singh, were present. |
Sonia being misguided,
says Bitta Karnal, January 12 Rejecting the views of certain party leaders that the party’s poor performance in the Assembly elections was due to the weak leadership of Ms Sonia Gandhi, he said the growing factionalism and lack of dedication among party leaders had led to the defeat. “All, except a few party leaders who are close to Ms Gandhi are misguiding her on policy issues of the party”, he said. Criticising the tie-up with DMK, he said it was not in the interest of the party. He said, “Everybody knows about Mr Karunanidhi’s relations with Vaiko and Prabhakaran of LTTE and their alleged role in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi”. He alleged that senior leaders close to Ms Gandhi had misguided her to go in for an alliance with DMK. He also criticised the decision of the Union Government to resume air and rail link with Pakistan until Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Azhar Masood and activists of pro-Khalistan movement who had taken asylum in Pakistan were handed over to India. He said the front would stage protest in front of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on January 14 and seek extradition of Dawood Ibrahim, Maulana Azhar Masood and activists of pro-Khalistan movement who had taken asylum in Pakistan. The Chief Election Commissioner, Mr G.M. Lyngdoh, will be given ‘Pride of the Nation’ award. |
