Oxford bag Subroto Cup

Oxford School, Aizawl (Mizoram) asserted their supremacy when they edged out Government Senior Secondary School, Carnicobar 5-3 via tie-beaker in the under-17 final of the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Sunday.

Ashael W put Carnicobar in the lead in the sixth minute while the Mizo boys equalised during injury time.

With the scores tied 1-1, extra time proved goalless and in the tie-breaker, Lal Ramhluna, Zodinglina, David and Lalmalanume scored for Mizoram while only Ashael and Manuah could strike for Car Nicobar.

Oxford received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 while Carnicobar got Rs 30,000. Holy Heart School, Aizawl (Mizoram) retained the under-14 title when they defeated Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Pratishthan, Dhaka (Bangladesh) 1-0. Lalramluaha scored the match-winner in the 53rd minute.

Holy Heart took home Rs 30,000 as prize money while the Dhaka team pocketed Rs 20,000. Vanlal Peka and Lalnunpuia were adjudged the best players in the junior and sub-junior section, respectively.

Chowrasia lifts Tata Open Golf title

New Delhi, December 22
SSP Chowrasia won a dream title as the second edition of the Rs 15 lakh Tata Open Golf Tournament, an event of the Hero Honda Golf Tour, provided enough excitement to everybody.

Trailing by a stroke on the last hole, Chowrasia made an amazing putt to tie with Ashok Kumar and won on the first play-off hole to win back-to-back titles after the NCC Open victory last week. Both Ashok and Chowrasia played a final round of four-under 66 for a 72-hole total of 10 under 270.

Feroz Ali, who led, hit an ‘out of bound’ on the finishing hole and thereby closing on his chances of a second title of the season. He had to be contend with the third position. Chowrasia took home the winner’s cheque of Rs 2,43,300 while Ashok pocketed Rs 1,68,000. Feroz earned Rs 94,500.

Abhishek Choudhary hits century

A racy century by Abhishek Choudhary and deadly bowling of 6 for 57 by Ajay Chauhan helped Gyan Bharati South Delhi Academy draw with DAV, Shalimarbagh and earn 11 points in the two-day Aviva Young Achiever Under-13 Cricket Tournament at the Gyan Bharati ground.

Scores: DAV (1st innings): 166 all out in 42.3 overs (Prateek Kaushik 48, Bharat Yadav 48, Ajay Chouhan 6 for 57, Kartikey Kaul 2 for 43). Second innings: 295 for 6 in 78 overs (Shanu Kumar 50, Tushal Alekar 65 n o, Ajay Chouhan 3 for 68).

Gyan Bharati (1st innings): 253 for 8 in 61 overs (Abhishek Choudhary 124, Dishank Dhawan 51 n o, Akhil Goyal 3 for 72, Ankit Dabas 2 for 67, Nischay Sharma 2 for 51).

Madras Club win

Madras Club defeated Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd by six wickets in the DDCA A-I Division League at the Ramjas Sports Complex ground.

Scores: MTNL: 120 for 5 in 20 overs (Ankit Jaiswal 39, N C Bhat 23, Ashok Punia 2 for 25).

Madras Club: 121 for 4 in 18.3 overs (Varun Sharma 64, Ajeet Choudhary 23 n o, Sanjeev Khanna 2 for 25).

Sandeep Malhotra stars in Nehru Cricket

An all-round display by Sandeep Malhotra, who scored an unbeaten 55 (4x6, 54, 34b) and took three wickets for nine runs, and an explosive unbeaten 78, studded with 15 boundaries off 63 balls, by K S Bedi enabled Raymond XI defeat Parliamentarians XI by 262 runs in the annual Raymond Trophy Cricket match played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Sports Minister Vikram Verma gave away the prizes. Scores: Raymond XI: 382 for 4 in 35 overs (K S Bedi 78, Sandeep Malhotra 55, Mohan Sharma 56, Surya Azad 38 n o, K P Singh Deo 2 for 29).

Parliamentarians XI: 120 in 35 overs (Kirti Azad 43, Nalin Patel 21, Rani Narah 18, Vikram Kaul 3 for 15, Sandeep Malhotra 3 for 9, S P Sharma 2 for 13, Somaya Azad 2 for 38).

Kirti Azad was adjudged the best batsman while K P Singh Deo was adjudged the best bowler. Sandeep Malhotra and Nalin Patel were named the man of the match and best fielder respectively.

Jamia Millia down Deshbandhu

Devastating bowling displays by Rashid Hussain Khan (4 for 14), Amij Nethani (2 for 5), Bharat (2 for 11) and Sajit (2 for 17) helped Jamia Millia Islamia defeat Deshbandhu College by eight wickets in the opening match of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Inter-College Cricket Tournament.

Chairman of Bhagat Singh College Dalbir Singh inaugurated the tournament. Principal of the college Dr Jitinder Kaur was also present.

Scores: Deshbandhu College: 48 all out in 21.5 overs (Manish 18, Rashid Hussain 4 for 14, Amir 2 for 5, Bharat 2 for 11, Sajit 2 for 17).

Jamia Millia: 49 for 2 in 6.5 overs (Rashid 17, Adnan 16 n o, Lalit 2 for 21).

Inter-varsity squash championship

Rohtak, December 22
Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, and Osmania University, Hyderabad, won their opening matches of the All India Inter-University Squash (men) Championship, which commenced here at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) today. Jai Narain Vyas University defeated Anna University Chennai by 3-0 margin, whereas Osmania University beat Kolkata University by 3-2 margin.

Earlier in the day, the championship was declared open by the Registrar of MDU, Mr A. K. Rajan.

On the occasion, he reiterated the commitment of the University to encourage sports. Teams representing nineteen universities are taking part in the championship.

Top teams for Shakuntla cricket

Top 12 teams will participate in the fourth Shakuntla Devi Memorial Cricket Tournament for Under-19 to be held at the Sumit Dogra Academy ground from December 25. Sonnet will take on Hansraj Model School in the opening match.

The other teams in the fray are Dogra Academy, I G Stadium, Abhay Ram Gymkhana, Young Friends, Dronacharya Academy, S D Gyan Bharati Academy, R P Academy, Jheel Khureja Govt.School, K N Colts and R P Malik Academy.

Cavalry win polo title

61 Cavalry defeated ABN-Amro Bank by 6-5 to win the Nawab of Bhopal and Pataudi Cup Polo Tournament at the Jaipur Polo ground on Sunday.

Tarun Sirhohi (2), Sanjay Singh and Atul Gupta (3) scored the goals for Cavalry while Omar Younes, Basheer Ali (2), Uday Kalaan and Hamza Ali scored the goals for ABN-Amro. Sharmila Tagore Pataudi gave away the prizes.

Under-11 Chess tourney

New Delhi, December 22
The National Under-11 Chess Championship will be held at the Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra, Panchkuian Road (near Connaught Place), from December 23. Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel will inaugurate the tournament at 9.30 a m. Over 250 chess players from across the country, including Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Assam and Goa will participate in the championship. OSR
