NC worker among 7 killed in valley

Srinagar, December 22
Militants gunned down three persons, including a National Conference worker and a girl in Kashmir valley, where the police defused a powerful explosive device near a school and busted a Hizbul Mujahideen hideout since last night, official sources said today.

National Conference worker Ghulam Ahmad Ganai was shot dead by militants inside his house at Dalawach in Badgam district of central Kashmir late last night, the sources said.

Militants also intruded into a house in Tangmarg in Baramulla district of north Kashmir and shot at a girl, identified as Kulsooma, a student of Class XII.

The body of an unidentified person was found by police in Dagripora village of Baramulla this morning, the sources said, adding that the deceased might have been killed by militants.

Militants shot at and injured one Abdul Gani Wani at Arihama village of Kokernag in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, the sources said.

They said the police detected a powerful explosive device near a school at Prisan-Catergul in the same district today which was subsequently defused by the experts. The school was closed on account of winter vacation.

The police busted a Hizbul Mujahideen hideout at Trangbal village of Baramulla in north Kashmir last night and seized 37 anti-tank rifle grenades.

Meanwhile, 11 persons, including two policemen, were injured when militants exploded a grenade at a crowded bus stand in Anantnag district of south Kashmir today, official sources said.

Militants lobbed a grenade on a party of Special Operation Group (SOG) of the local police at a bus stand in Kulgam township, 75 km from here, around 1.45 pm, the sources said.

Jamait-e-Islami not to follow Geelani line
M. L. Kak

Jammu, December 22
The Jamait-e-Islami leadership has turned down hardliners’ suggestion on the line adopted by a former senior party leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who now heads a faction of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC).

Jamaat sources said during a recent meeting of senior functionaries of the Jamait-e-Islami the Naio Amir (Vice-Chief) Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, had suggested that the party should follow the pro-Pakistan and pro-Jehadi policies pursued by Mr Geelani.

He also stated that despite his resignation six months ago Mr Geelani continued to be a senior Jamaat supporter. He was not countered at the meeting. Later a spokesman for the Jamait-e-Islami, Mr Zahid Ali, announced that the party did not support Mr Sehrai.

He said the Jamait-e-Islami had its own policy and was not in favour of toeing somebody’s line. Mr Ali even blamed Mr Sehrai for not promoting the party interest, indicating that everything was not fine in the organisation even after Mr Geelani left the party.

On the other hand there is a rift in the APHC (Geelani) over the conditions imposed by Sheikh Aziz Ahmed, chief of the Peoples’ League, on joining Geelani.

Sources said that Sheikh Aziz usually supported Mr Geelani when he was a member of the undivided APHC. And Mr Geelani had suggested to Mr Sheikh to join the amalgam he was heading. But Sheikh Aziz has put a condition that Mohd Yusuf Mir and Khan Sopori, who as leaders of factions of the Peoples’ League, had joined the APHC (Geelani), be dropped from the conference.

Supporters of Mr Geelani had rumoured that Mr Mir had opted out of the conglomerate on personal reasons but Mir followers have denied it.

Sources said in case Sheikh Aziz insisted on seeking Mir and Sopori out of the conglomerate they might be dropped because Sheikh has a better image than that of the two. And if the plan materialises Mir and Sopori may return to the faction headed by Maulvi Abbas Ansari thereby allowing the Maulvi a chance to enlarge the base of his conglomerate in Kashmir.

Kashmiri kids get BSF plane ride

Srinagar, December 21
If venturing out of the valley for the first time was an unbelievable experience for 30-odd Kashmiri children, the Border Security Force made the trip all the more memorable by flying them from Jammu to Srinagar — another first for the kids from remote parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The happiest moment of my life was boarding an aircraft. It was my biggest dream and it has materialised,” said Mohammad Akbar Dar, a resident of Rajpora village in south Kashmir Pulwama district, after alighting from the special BSF aircraft at Srinagar airport yesterday.

It was a dream come true for the 40 students from far flung and remote areas of north Kashmir — witnessing the retreat ceremony at Wagah border, travelling in an aircraft and visiting historic places in different parts of the country.

The students, hailing from backward areas in the northern part of the state, who were taken on a 13- day-long Bharat Darshan by the BSF, said they were surprised to see the fast-paced but peaceful life outside.

“We had witnessed the Retreat Ceremony of the Pakistani Rangers and Border Security Force (BSF) on the Wagah border only on television in the past. But seeing the ceremony live was something different. We still don’t believe that we reached the places which our fathers or grandfathers could not even imagine of,” they said.

Some of the young students were much delighted after they were brought back to Srinagar from Jammu in a BSF aircraft yesterday.

“We had never been to Srinagar and it was for the first time we saw rail and aircraft,” they said.

The BSF Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) who presented mementos to the youths before they left for their homes, said they were taken to various places like Jammu, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ajmer Sharief.

At Amritsar, they had the opportunity to witness the Retreat Ceremony at Wagah border, they also paid obeisance at the Dargah of Khawaja Ajmeri and enjoyed the beauty of Taj Mahal at Agra and visited important places in Delhi.

They also interacted with local students at all these places, where they were greeted very warmly and had an opportunity to exchange their views with each other, he said.

This was the fifth such group sponsored by the BSF for the tour to “give these children an exposure to the situation in other parts of the country”.

The students were provided with free clothing, boarding and lodging, transportation and pocket money during the tour, he said adding that so far the BSF had taken 200 Kashmiri students from different remote and far-flung areas for Bharat Darshan.
