Title win for St Stephen’s School

Chandigarh, December 22
St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, emerged champions on the concluding day of the First Kanwar Harbans Lal Memorial Football Tournament played at the Football Stadium, Sector 17, here today. In a pulsating final, St Stephen’s boys humbled the spirited Mehar Football Academy, Kurali, by four goals to two.

The nerve-racking final saw both sides tied at 1-1 till half-time.

The first 15 minutes of the game saw both teams put up a neck and neck fight. Stephen’s boys in white jerseys tried to apply pressure on the Kurali team, who played in black-red jerseys.

Right striker Ravinder Singh of Kurali broke the deadlock when he scored the first goal in the 18th minute. But the lead was short-lived as opposition’s half-back Simon Vincent converted a chance in the 20th minute of the match. The first-half score was tied at 1-1.

After the play began in the second half, young Aita Ram struck the second goal for his team in the 42nd minute of the match. However, Vikas of Mehar Academy managed to equalise for his team in the 45th minute of the match.

After around 10 minutes of intense football, forward Lakhvir Singh scored the third goal for St Stephen’s team in the 56th minute of the match.

St Stephen’s star player Aita Ram struck for the second time to score the fourth goal for his team in the 65th minute. The 4-2 lead proved decisive for St Stephen’s School.

Jashanpreet Singh of St Stephen’s was declared man of the match. Davinder Singh of Mehar Football Academy was adjudged man of the tournament.

The teams were: St Stephen’s: Prabhjot Singh, Vikramjeet, Akshit, Manpreet, Parmeet, Sukhdeep, Simon, Chavideep, Jashanpreet, Amit Kumar, Aita Ram, Sahibinder, Hardeep, Lakhveer, Nikhil, Pritpal, Jaspreet and Jaskaran.

Mehar Academy: Harjinder, Kulwinder, Manjeet, Harjinder Singh, Yadwinder, Ajay, Manpreet, Mandeep, Vikas, Ravinder, Davinder, Gurtaj, Suraj, Ravijot, Amarjeet, MChandra and Amit.

Mr Nand Lal, Accountant General, AG, Punjab, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

Sports meet begins at GMN College

Ambala, December 22
A two-day annual sports meet began in GMN College, Ambala Cantonment today.
Divisional Railway Manager Keshav Chandra was the chief guest. Mr Chandra said students must concentrate in studies as well as sports for overall development. Among others, Mr Laxmi Sagar, Dr R.R. Malik and Dr Suraj Bhan were present.

In high jump (men), Gurdhyan came first, Rahul Aggarwal finished second, while Paramjeet was third. In 50 m slow cycling (women), Arti came first, Ragini was second, while Amandeep finished third.

In discus throw (men), Sumit Duhan came first, Vishal was second and, Ajay Rathi finished third. In 50 m (women), Gurpreet came first, Amandeep came second while Sarika finished third.

In shot put (men), Sandeep Singh came first, Rajesh was second and Nitin finished third.

In hop step and jump, Ashish came first, Chander Bhushan stood second while Vishal finished third. In high jump (women), Sandhya was first, Gurdeep came second while Arti finished third. In 400m (men), Ashwani Kumar came first, Paramjeet was second and Vishal finished third.

In javelin throw (men), Sumit Duhan stood first, Sandeep Yadav was second, while Vishal came third.

In javelin throw (women), Dilraj came first, Ragini was second and Amandeep finished third. In 3000 m (men), Yaadwinder came first, Ajit Pal was second and Gurdhyan finished third.

In long jump (women), Sarika came first, Gurpreet was second while Gurdeep finished third. In shot put (women), Dilraj was first, Aarti was second and Gurpreet came third.

High Court Club enter semis

Panchkula: High Court Club defeated Harmukh Kashmiri Club by 40 runs to enter the semifinal in the Canara Bank Cup Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament organised by the District Panchkula Cricket Association at the Sector-3, cricket stadium, here.

High Court Club: 152 for 9 (Rajinder Kohli 42, Sandeep Gulati 31, Vikram Sharma 31, Devi Dutt 29; Raj Kumar 5 for 24, Ajay Pandita 2 for 30. Prafful 2 for 34).

The semifinals will be held on January 4, according to R.P. Chopra, honourary secretary of the District Panchkula Cricket Association.

Sports meet

ROPAR: The Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, Ms Seema Jain, today inaugurated a sports meet at the local Shivalik Public School. During the meet students of the school would participate in various athletics events.

The Deputy Commissioner also gave away awards to schoolchildren who had excelled in academics and sports. Ms Amarjit Kaur and Mr Mandeep Singh were declared athletes for the events held today.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Ropar, Mr Balbir Singh, Asistant Commissioner Grievances, Mr Surinder Riar, president of the District Bar Association, Mr I.P.S. Dher, and Principal of the school, Ms Gurpreet Mathur, were among others present on the occasion.
