Health workers to launch stir against
privatisation move
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, December 17
The Multi-Purpose Health Workers Association of the Health Department has decided to launch an agitation against the state government’s move to hand over the department to private companies. The association will organise demonstrations at different places on certain dates to oppose the move.

In a joint press statement issued here today, the state vice-president, Ms Sunita Rana, and the state general secretary, Mr Ram Mehar Verma, of the association said after abolition of 629 posts the government was now planning to declare 2,380 employees surplus. These employees included 890 sweepers, 173 gardeners, 103 washermen, 80 cooks, 250 field workers and 573 paramedical staff.

They pointed out that the European companies wanted to take control of this public welfare department in a phased manner by abolishing the existing posts and retrenching the serving employees.

Putting a question mark over the recently commenced Health Department-at-your-doorstep programme, the association leaders alleged the authorities were not providing medicines and health employees going in the villages under the programme were being pushed forward to bear the brunt of the public’s anger.

The leaders announced that the association will organise a demonstration outside the residence of the Health Minister, Mr M. L. Ranga, at Rewari on April 11. Before that, the protests would be organised at Hisar on February 8, at Gurgaon on February 29, at Ambala on March 14 and at Rohtak on March 28, the release added.

The association will also organise a rally at Jind on February 1. “The government move to privatise the health services will deprive the poor people of free medical treatment in the government hospitals and render thousands of the employees of the lower categories of the department jobless,” they observed.
