Fresh snow in Himachal
Pradesh Shimla, December 9 Shimla and its surrounding areas had rain and sleet while the adjoining tourist resort of Kufri and Wild Flower Hall had sleet, followed by mild snowfall. The sky remained heavily overcast in Shimla and its adjoining areas causing a sharp fall in the mercury. The high-altitude areas of tribal
Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi valleys, Rohtang, Kunzam and Baralacha passes also experienced fresh snowfall creating freezing cold-wave conditions in the adjoining higher hills. The sprawling Dhauladhar ranges overlooking the lush green Kangra valley and the Chhota and Bara Bhangal areas of Kangra district also had fresh snowfall. MANDI: After a long spell of dry weather, the high-altitude areas of the district had snowfall on Tuesday. It is raining in the lower belts of the region. The rain is said to be beneficial for the wheat and vegetable crops. The entire region is in the grip of a cold wave. Meanwhile, honeymoon couples have started thronging hotels in large numbers. KANGRA: The entire Kangra valley on Tuesday shivered following snowfall on the sprawling Dhauladhar mountain ranges overlooking the valley and rain in the valley resulting in a sharp fall in the mercury. Tuesday morning was sunny but the sky was overcast with clouds in the forenoon which resulted in snowfall on the Dhauladhar ranges and rain in the valley disrupting normal life. The Dhauladhar wore a white-carpet look after the snowfall and reports of rain were received from Dharamsala,
Gaggal, Nagrota Bagwan, Palampur Baijnath and Malan. The town also experienced showers. The ice-cold winds forced people to be indoors. Fast winds later in the day uprooted some trees in different parts of the district but there were no reports of any loss of life or property. Power supply in different parts of the district was disrupted following stormy winds. HAMIRPUR: The district is in the grip of a cold wave due to snowfall atop the nearby Dhauladhar ranges and light to medium rains in the region since early morning. Ice-cold waves are sweeping across the region and compelling the people to wear heavy woollen clothes. School and college students were the worst-hit as most of them had not brought umbrellas with them. They were seen rushing around for shelter. Meanwhile, farmers have welcomed the showers as beneficial for the Rabi crops. Others, who have yet to sow the crops, are also happy that rains at this juncture will help them to plough their fields to get good Rabi crops. |

Kokje urged to sack
3 HPU panel members Shimla, December 9 Mr Randhir Sharma, spokesperson for the party, said the subcommittee was specifically constituted to verify the facts from the official records after Mr Suresh Chandel MP and a member of the executive council, pointed out certain fallacies in the Kaul committee report. However, instead of placing the facts before the executive council, it simply endorsed the findings of the Kaul committee deliberately ignoring the facts to please the powers that be. Such dishonesty on the part of members of the highest decision-making body of the university was unacceptable and they deserved to be removed from the council immediately. He cited five cases supported with photocopies of the relevant record in which facts were distorted or omitted altogether in the Kaul committee. All this only established the BJP charge that the report was politically motivated. He alleged that the Congress government, which gave jobs on chits during its previous term, was back to its old ways. The Chief Minister and other ministers were sending written recommendations for the appointment of not only class IV and class Independent employees but also of lecturers. He released photocopies of such recommendatory notes. |
Plan to propagate trout,
mahseer Shimla, December 9 This was stated by Mr Rajnath Singh, Union Agriculture Minister, in a written communication to Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, MP and President of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), who had drawn his attention to the sharp decline in the number of the two premium fish varieties, particularly in Himachal Pradesh, last month. He said the secretary-level consultations would involve officials of Himachal Pradesh Uttaranchal and Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Minister has also given details of the steps being taken to protect the trout from viral disease and boost the population of the mahseer. He said a national fish pathological laboratory was being set up for regular monitoring and conducting studies for the timely detection of disease. There was no treatment or vaccine to combat the viral disease which wiped out trout from rivers of Himachal Pradesh last year. The state had, according to advice of experts, destroyed the entire affected stocks on government and private farms and the tanks were disinfected. |
Poll of committee chief
postponed Nurpur, December 9 It is pertinent to mention that a no confidence motion was passed against the BJP-supported BDC Chairperson, Ms Surinder Kaur, this year, which was challenged by her before the Deputy Commissioner, Kangra. On November 17, the motion was declared valid. Interestingly the local unit of the Congress is divided on the issue of the elections of the BDC Chairman, whereas the BJP-supported committee members are united in favour of Ms Surinder Kaur. |

Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan a success in Nadaun Hamirpur, December 9 Nearly 150 children of these families have enrolled themselves in three mobile schools at Bela, Chowki and Gauna in Nadaun revenue subdivision on this district. In all, five such schools have been opened in the district. Incidentally, all these children belong to one caste. These families belong to Rajasthan and Bihar and have been working in these villages as daily-paid workers dealing with stone-crushing, exploitation of sand and bajri. These families used to put their children in traditional business since childhood. However, wisdom prevailed upon them after Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan volunteers convinced them about sending their wards to schools. Mr Anup Thakur, convener of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan in Nadaun block, says the drive was a centrally sponsored programme aimed at covering more people in the country in general and Himachal Pradesh in particular. He sought the co-operation of local people to help left-out children enroll in schools opened for them. |
