3 rural schemes launched on Haryana Day Uchana (Karnal), November 1 He said the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had spent over Rs 927 crore during the past three and a half years on construction and renovation activities. HUDA sold 84,884 plots during the period, he added. He said 3,945 acres of land had been acquired by HUDA and over Rs 431 crore had been given as compensation to the land owners. Mr Chautala announced that a scheme of Rs 140 crore had also been chalked out for shifting dairies, piggeries and truck unions out of the municipal limits of the cities and towns in the state. He said HUDA had decided to develop more parks in all major cities and towns that had not been covered earlier. The Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of Community Latrines Scheme under the Total Rural Sanitation Programme. He distributed kisan credit cards issued by Punjab National Bank to farmers. On this occasion, the Town and Country Planning Minister, Mr Dhir Pal Singh, stated that 150 plots would be given to the residents of this village under the rural housing scheme. He disclosed that 170 applications had already been received. He said six villages, including Uchana, had been identified in the district to develop such residential colonies. Other villages identified for this scheme in Karnal district include Samana Bahu, Nissing, Gagsina, Jabhala and Bhadson. The District Magistrate of Karnal, Mr R.S. Doon, disclosed that a sum of Rs 9.7 crore had been earmarked in the district under the Total Rural Sanitation Programme during the current financial year and as many as 11,250 latrines had already been constructed under this scheme. Mr Bhaskar Chatterjee, the Principal Secretary of the Town and Country Planning Department, Mr D.S. Dhesi, Secretary, Forest Department, Mr N.C. Wadhwa, the Chief Administrator of HUDA and other senior officials of the district administration were present on the occasion. KURUKSHETRA (OC): A state-level function to mark Haryana Day was celebrated at the Kurukshetra University auditorium here today. The Haryana Governor, Babu Parmanand, was the chief guest while the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, presided over the function. The Chief Minister also announced a grant of Rs 31,000 for the encouragement of the artistes. YAMUNANAGAR (OC):
On the occasion of Haryana Day, Mr Vijayender Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, launched a programme from Kulchandu village of Mustafabad block by planting a medicinal plant. Medicinal plants would be planted on panchayat lands of 175 villages in the district under the programme. While addressing a gathering of villagers, Mr Vijayender Kumar said an action plan had been introduced for diversification of crops for which 175 villages of the district would be selected for the plantation of herbal crops. Centre to abide by SC ruling on SYL Sirsa, November 1 Later, in another function held at the local Panchayat Bhavan, the Chief Minister inaugurated a pilot project for the computerisation of land records of the district. This project will be funded by the Union Ministry of Information and Technology. Deputy Commissioner D. Suresh informed that this project would provide an easy access to the land record. It would also ensure transparency and rule out any tampering with the record, he added. The Chief Minister announced that mentally challenged children and physically challenged persons would be given the facility of concessional bus fare in state roadways buses. Mr Chautala, who was inaugurating a camp for the treatment and rehabilitation of the handicapped organised by the district administration and Indian Development Council here, said this facility would be available with immediate effect. |
Martyr consigned to
flames Gadhauli (Ambala),
November 1 Hav Naresh Kumar attained martyrdom at Narula in Kargil sector on October 30. He belonged to 6 PARA and had died after completing a long-range patrol in the difficult Kargil area. The martyr is survived by his wife and a six-year-old son. Hav Naresh Kumar had called up home last week and said he would not be available for sometime as he had to go on patrolling duty. He had said he would make a call as soon as he was back. The family members of the Havaldar received a telegram about his death yesterday. Since then, a pall of gloom had descended on the village. Life will never be the same for soldier Nirmal Singh who had lost his friend Naresh Kumar in Kargil. Nirmal Singh accompanied his body to Gadhauli village. Nirmal Singh could not hold back his tears as he bid adieu to his friend. Havaldar Naresh Kumar is not the first martyr from Gadhauli village. During the Kargil war, soldier Pawan Kumar Saini had attained martyrdom. Three more soldiers from the village have lost their lives in various operations. A large number of local people had turned up to pay respects to the martyr. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Army Commander, Commander PH & HP (I) Sub Area, the Haryana Chief Minister and other senior officers. Among others, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr M.L. Kaushik, and the DSP, Naraingarh, Mr Ashok Sabharwal, were present. The Additional DC provided a sum of Rs 10,000 from the District Red Cross for the family members of the martyr.

Attacks on journalists worry BJP chief
Rohtak, November 1 Addressing his first press conference after taking charge as the state’s BJP chief at the Haryana BJP headquarter here, he asserted that the BJP firmly believed in the freedom of the Press and had been opposing attempts to curbs the freedom of expression. “Media is like the ‘teesra netra’ (third eye) of Lord Shiva and whosoever unnecessarily disturbed it would get ruined,” he said. The former Haryana Minister promised that the BJP would do everything possible to protect the freedom of the media. Flanked by former Haryana BJP chief and senior party leader Ram Bilas Sharma and outgoing state BJP president Rattan Lal Kataria, the new incument to the post offered to arrange an appointment with Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani for a delegation of journalists from Haryana “to raise the issue of attacks on mediapersons in the state”. He reiterated the demand for a CBI inquiry into the murder of two Haryana scribes — Ram Chander Chhatarpati at Sirsa last year and Parmanand Goel at Kaithal this year.

Warrant against Cong legislator Hisar, November 1 The Kaithal police had registered a case against him, his driver Bhim Singh and a gun house owner at Pundari police station under Sections 420, 468 and 471 of the IPC yesterday on the complaint of a Sub Inspector Balbir Singh. According to the FIR, Jai Bhagwan, owner of the gun house, had backdated entry of deposit of Jai Parkash’s revolver. The police alleged that Bhim Singh had deposited the revolver at the Gun House and signed the register as Jai Parkash. According to the police, Jai Bhagwan was also involved in the conspiracy. The police alleged that Jai Parkash’s arms licence had also expired. Meanwhile, a local court today fixed November 6 for the hearing of bail application of the Congress legislator. |
Samata men burn Kapil's
effigy Naraingarh (Ambala), November 1 Mr Sanjeev, secretary of the Haryana unit of the Samata Party, said the party was strongly against the setting up of a casino in the state. "We will not allow the setting up of a casino. If the government tries to establish a casino in Gurgaon, we will take out a padyatra highlighting the ill-effects of gambling," he said. He said there was a need to ensure that a social evil like gambling is not promoted in Haryana. "Kapil Dev is associated with the setting up of the casino. So we are burning his effigy," he said. He stated that when allegations of match-fixing were levelled against Kapil Dev, he had cried on television and denied any hand in it. "Now he is planning to set up a casino. Is there any difference between gambling and match-fixing?" he said. The activists then raised slogans against Kapil Dev and the Haryana Government. They demanded that the proposal for the casino should be turned down immediately. |
2 drowned in Yamuna Yamunanagar, November 1 In another case, the body of a youth was found floating in the Yamuna near the Hathni Kund barrage, about 30 km from here, this morning. It is learnt that a chowkidar of Tajewala Headworks found the body floating and he informed the Khizrabad police station. The identity of the deceased has not been established as yet. He is about 35 years old and is wearing a yellow-coloured shirt. The police has started investigations. |
Girl ends life over broken engagement Yamunanagar, November 1 The date of marriage was fixed for November 25, 2003, and the girl’s parents had been making preparations for the marriage. It is learnt that even the wedding cards had been printed. This morning Shyam Sharma is reported to have rung up his fiancee telling her that he could not get married to her. After hearing out Mr Sharma, the girl consumed celphos tablets and ended her life. The police has registered a case against Mr Sharma and his parents on the charge of forcing the girl to commit suicide. The body of the girl has been sent for a post-mortem. |
Conference of Orthopaedic
Association Ambala, November 1 More than 150 orthopaedic surgeons are participating in the two-day conference. In his address Mr Bhan said a doctor should be gentle and smiling as well as knowledgeable and dexterous. Organising secretary of the association K.D. Sharma called upon the doctors to do introspection and update their knowledge periodically through conferences, he said. About 40 speakers would deliver lectures on various issues. The topics range from joint replacement surgery to high-profile trauma. Dr N.K. Magu, president of the Haryana chapter of the association, said efforts would be made to bring the latest in orthopaedics to every individual in the state. He observed that orthopaedic surgeons work in very trying and difficult circumstances to alleviate the suffering of the patient and their actions should be taken supportingly. R.L. Mittal, former president of the association, shared his experiences on deformed foot since birth. The other speakers spoke about cancer management and difficult fractures of the hip. |
