Oust-Chautala call by Cong Sirsa, October 30 Ostensibly, the Congress leaders belonging to the anti-Bhajan Lal faction of the party were to assemble at Sirsa today to observe the 16th death anniversary of Mr Dalbir Singh, father of former Union Minister, Ms
Selja. However, a full-fledged rally was organised at a ground at Nathaushree Chopta near here on the occasion where Congress leaders praised Ms
Selja, who also hails from Sirsa, and asked the locals to reject Mr Chautala in the next elections. Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of the Opposition, said Mr Chautala was implicating his political rivals in false cases. Sirsa district topped in terms of the number of false cases filed under the Chautala-led government, he said. He asked the people of Sirsa to “wake up” and abandon the Chautala family. Captain Ajay Singh Yadav, Congress party’s Deputy Leader in the state Assembly, also made a scathing attack on the Chautala family and said a probe by the CBI should be ordered into the wealth acquired by the trust named after Mr Chautala’s father, Devi Lal. Mr
O.P. Jindal, also a Congress MLA, said that with Mr Chautala being the national president of the INLD, even the MPs of the INLD from the state were not free to spend the money received by them under the MP’s Area Development Fund. However, the rally was not all about attacking Mr Chautala alone. Mr Bhajan Lal, the HPCC chief, was also targeted by some of the speakers. These speakers, however, refrained from taking Mr Bhajan Lal’s name and couched their diatribe as an attack against the “practice of corruption”. Ms Selja, who was highly praised by all speakers, said she had been brought up in an environment where corruption was always decried. |

More land brought under fruit Chandigarh, October 30 Though the countryside of Haryana does not exactly resemble this scenario, Dr V.P. Ahlawat, Director, Horticulture, does claim that the crop in the
horticultural sector has been exceptionally good in the current year. The area under fruits, vegetables and flowers in the state are all in excess of their respective targets fixed by the government, Dr Ahlawat says. He attributes this phenomenon to the good rainfall this year. Talking to TNS yesterday, Dr Ahlawat said that the area under various fruits in the state was 31,856 hectares last year and it was proposed to be increased by 2,000 hectares more in the current year. However, by September an additional 2,425 hectares could be brought under fruit cultivation in the state, Dr Ahlawat claimed. “The state is divided into two zones in terms of agricultural climate. While mango, plum,
litchi etc are the main crops of the eastern zone, guava and ber are the important crops of districts such as Hisar, Rohtak, etc, falling in the western zone”, Dr Ahlawat said. According to him, fruit production in the state was over 1.19 lakh tonnes till September this year. The corresponding figures last year was around 90,000 tonnes, he said. In fact last year also the target for expansion of area under fruit was kept at a modest 2,000 hectares but apparently the target could not achieved at all due to lack of rainfall. For vegetable cultivation, the projected expansion was fixed at over one lakh hectares and by September, an additional area of over 79,000 hectares had been already brought under vegetable, the Horticulture Director said. He added that last year only 54,760 hectares of additional area could be brought under vegetable cultivation. Similarly, in flower cultivation also, an addition of 2490 hectares had been made to the existing area. The corresponding figure was 2052 hectares last year, Dr Ahlawat said. As Haryana’s plan for diversification from the traditional paddy-wheat rotation is yet to pick up momentum, the expansion stated to have taken place in the horticulture sector will give the state government some consolation, it is believed. |

MDU teachers submit memo to Parmanand Chandigarh, October 30 The allegation was levelled in a memorandum submitted to the Governor and Chancellor of the university, Babu Parmanand, by a delegation of the association here yesterday. The delegation, which was led by the association President, Dr Sudha Jain, comprised Dr Himmat Singh Ratnoo, Secretary of the association; Dr Ajmer Singh Kajal, Joint Secretary; and Mr Vazir Nehra, Vice-President of the AIFUCTO. Demanding immediate reinstatement of Dr
Ratnoo, the memorandum alleged that he was suspended by the Vice-Chancellor for opposing “hijacking of democracy” at a meeting of the Academic Council held on October 17. Earlier, Dr Ratnoo was elected to the Executive Council as teachers’ representative by an overwhelming majority in July last. However, two days before the election, the university authorities held a meeting of the council. After that no meeting of the council had been held though it was mandatory to hold the meeting every three months. The memorandum alleged that Dr Ratnoo had been suspended so that he could not participate in the Executive Council meeting. The delegation pointed out to the Chancellor that this had become a practice with the Vice-Chancellor to suspend vocal representatives of the teachers. Earlier, he had placed Dr Yujanvir Dahiya under suspension as the latter had incurred the wrath of the Vice-Chancellor because of his role in the Executive Council. A court of law which decided the issue in favour of Dr Dahiya had held that no disciplinary action could be taken against a member of the Executive Council for his activities as a council member. The court also held that at the meetings of the council, there was no master-subordinate relationship between the Vice-Chancellor and the members. The delegation urged the Chancellor to exercise his powers under Section 9(12) and Section 9(13) of the University Act to order immediate reinstatement of Dr
Ratnoo. |

female foeticide Kalka, October 30 In his address, Mr Kaushik expressed concern over the large-scale killing of female foetus due to which the population of women was declining day by day. He said about two decades back, ultrasound technique was introduced, the main purpose of which was to diagnose internal diseases. But gradually the technique started getting misused for determination of sex of foetus. As a result, in Haryana there were only 861 women against 1,000 men, a ratio which was reported to be the lowest in the country, he said. He urged panches, sarpanches of panchayats, aganwari workers, health centre staff present on the occasion to spread awareness among the public against the declining population of women. Ms Khanna, the project officer of the seminar, Ms Monika, and Dr Rajiv Dewan of the Civil Hospital also highlighted the consequences of the declining male: female ratio and the importance of the female child in society.
