Two-day session: Student parliamentarians
brainstorm health issues
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 22
While the city is grappling with dengue and other communicable diseases sparked off by the unhygienic living conditions, the first-ever All India Student Parliament on Health was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here today.

Lauding the efforts of the young activists and mock parliamentarians, Ms Dikshit emphasised the need for the individual to take care of their health and help in the national development.

Addressing the young parliamentarians, she said simple efforts and precautions like self-discipline and keeping one’s surroundings clean need no funding.

Organised by Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth (HRIDAY) and Student Health Action Network (SHAN), the mock parliament provided a forum to the youth from 10 different cities to address the issues that directly affect them, like financial allocation to the health sector, agricultural policies related to nutrition, provision of safe drinking water and healthy environment for children among others.

Replicating the parliamentary procedures, the two-day session began with the President’s joint address to the two Houses, followed by a debate on the motion of thanks.

HRIDAY-SHAN has been actively involved in generating awareness among the school and college students for the past one year and has received the WHO’s Tobacco Free World Award for 2000, besides having its programme listed as a best practice model and recommended for global replication by the organisation.

Supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the WHO, the first student parliament was organised in 2001, involving Class IX-XII students from 48 government and private schools of Delhi.
