India today made yet another diplomatic coup vis a vis Pakistan with the announcement of 12 major proposals to improve relations with the difficult neighbour. The proposals pertain largely to an area that is anathema to President Pervez Musharraf: people-to-people contact.

Geelani under house arrest

Syed Ali Shah Geelani In a pre-dawn swoop on separatists, JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik and J and K Democratic Freedom Party chief Shabir Ahmad Shah were taken into preventive custody along with 12 others while Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest this morning.

Advani to meet Hurriyat leaders
New Delhi, October 22
In a significant tactical move for finding an acceptable resolution of the Kashmir issue, the Centre today deputed Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani to hold talks with the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, a decision welcomed by its chief Moulvi Abbas Ansari. The decision was taken at a nearly two-hour meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
