Project for cultivation
of medicinal plants Panchkula, September 18 A total of 750 acres of land in the south-west and north- east regions of the state has been identified for the cultivation of these plants, at a cost of Rs 11.17 crore. As many as 58 farmers have registered themselves with the board for taking up cultivation of these plants on their land. The National Medicinal Plant Board will be providing a 30 per cent grant to each farmer. It is learnt that 48 of these farmers, from the districts of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Sonepat and Rewari in south-west Haryana and Yamunanagar, Panchkula and Ambala in north-east part of the state have submitted their projects to the state board which, in turn, has referred these to the National Medicinal Plant Board. Officials in the State Medicinal Plants Board inform that since there is a wide variety of land habits in the state, it offers a wider scope of cultivating these medicinal plants. The technical committee of the board has identified isabgol, mulethi, ashgandha, sanai, satawar, gurmar , aloe vera, aonla and guggal species of medicinal plants as suitable for the arid and semi-arid areas (in the south-west region) and safed musli, sarapgandha, konch, turmeric, aloe vera, amahaldi, harar, vach, akarkara and bahera for the irrigated and high rainfall receiving north-east part of the state. Some high-value aromatic plants and commercial crop having higher economic value like jatropha can also be cultivated throughout the state. Officials of the board say that the cultivation of medicinal plants in agro-forestry will not only enhance the production of medicinal and aromatic plants but also help in biodiversity conservation in forests and provide diversification of land use in the agricultural sector. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Haryana, Mr J P L Srivastava, informed The Tribune that under the project emphasis had not only been given to cultivation of these plants in agro-forestry but efforts had been made to ensure a regular market for their produce. “The farmers have already signed agreements with buyers and drug manufacturing companies to buy these plants at the existing market price,” he said. When asked about the possible fluctuation of market prices of these plants, officials of the board as well as the Forest department concede that though the price is higher now, it may come down when a large-scale cultivation is undertaken by farmers. However, the officials reason, that the economic returns from the cultivation of these plants will be higher than the traditional agriculture of wheat and paddy. Meanwhle, the State Medicinal Plants Board and the Forest Department are organising a conference on “medicinal plants in agro-forestry” on November 3 and 4. The conference will cover identification of suitable medicinal plant, their cultivation, value addition, utilisation and marketing aspects. The deliberations are expected to recommend strategies for sustainable development of these plants in the country, to be incorporated in world conventions, national policies and legal framework. |
