Pak beat Bangladesh
Lahore, September 15 Bangladesh’s target was revised to 244 off 44 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method after play was twice halted due to malfunctioning of one of six light towers and 55 minutes of play was lost. Earlier, Inzamam-ul-Haq scored his 66th half century in limited overs cricket to propel Pakistan to 257 for nine. The Pakistan captain stood firm with an unbeaten 64 from 54 balls. Bangladesh medium pacer Tapash Baisya took three wickets in five balls in the penultimate over to check a late Pakistan surge in which 57 runs came in the last six overs. Baisya got rid of Abdul Razzak, Kamran Akmal and Junaid Zia on the second, fifth and last ball of his ninth over to pull back Pakistan, who had been cruising at 242 for six with 11 balls remaining. Saurav out to maintain winning streak
Kolkata, September 15 Talking about the forthcoming New Zealand Test series, the Indian Skipper said, “I think New Zealand can pose a challenge to us. They pressurised Sri Lanka on their soil. However, the Lankans have only one Muralidharan, but we have two world class spinners in Harbhajan and Kumble operating from both ends and so the pressure will be much greater.’’ “They are a competent side, but India has a fantastic record at home. We are not going to make any difference to it this time. For every touring captain, India is the biggest hurdle in the subcontinent and it will remain the same.’’ On team composition going by the fact that Ganguly said, “In order to win a test match we have to take 20 wickets and for that the bowlers need to go all out during their spells. Therefore, we will either need an allrounder or a wicketkeeper who can bat. I believe in the concept of playing five bowlers and plan to stick to it. Only Australia which possesses bowlers like Brett Lee and Glen McGrath can have the luxury of having less than five bowlers. Now even without Shane Warne they are playing five bowlers allrounder Andy Bichel chipping in,’’ he added. “When I ask a bowler to bowl he should not hold himself back thinking that he has a long day ahead of him. So either of the two is very handy. A player like Bangar can share the workload and also chip in. Sanjay played a stellar role in the Headingly Test against England last year where he took four wickets and opened the batting for the side,’’ he said. Talking about the recent Challenger Series, Saurav said, “There are several positives to count from the series. Sriram, Rohan Gavaskar and Badani showed they were in good nick. Yuvraj after the poor form in Yorkshire is again hitting the ball well.’’ “Avishkar Salvi showed he was in good form. Tamil Nadu’s Balaji has also developed immensely as a bowler. I guess he was on the wrong side of the series in West Indies, so we were not able to utilise him. He has also improved upon his fitness. I would also like to mention Sairaj Bahutule who has done pretty well for both Mumbai and then in the Challenger Series,’’ he added. Saurav was happy to see quite a few youngsters pushing through. “While we have a packed Test side, there are a couple of places to be taken in the shorter version of the game. Some of them have a good chance of making it to the side,’’ Saurav said. However, he was still worried with the wicket keeping options that India had, “We have seen only Parthiv Patel, Ajay Ratra and Thilak Naidu. However, I have a few names in mind. Rahul Dravid has done an excellent job with both the gloves and bat in the ODIs and we are in dire need of someone who could do the same in the Tests as it would increase our options.’’ “One must remember that in Test cricket a lot of balls go behind the stumps. So we need a competent keeper and if he can bat that will solve a lot of problems,’’ he said. On whether Ashis Nehra’s injury was a cause for concern for him with the forthcoming Test series, he said, “Ashis has developed as a bowler over the last half year. His injury will give a setback to our attacks, but at the same time he has to prove himself at the Test level. There are others like Amit Bhandari, Avishkar Salvi and Munaf Patel also and they can be tried out.’’— UNI |

Eldest of Williams sisters shot, suspect held
Compton, September 15 Aaron Michael Hammer was arrested as a suspect in the death yesterday of Yetunde Price, 31, in Compton, an area known for gang violence about 20 miles (32 km) south of Los Angeles, L.A. Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Spear said. He was being held without bail at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Los Angeles County, Spear said. Details of the arrest, the specific charges against Hammer or his relationship to the victim were not released. The suspected homicide occurred outside a single-family home that witnesses described as abandoned, after a confrontation between neighbourhood residents and Price, who was riding in a white sports utility vehicle with an unidentified man, Yates said. Price’s companion was not injured and was being held for questioning, police said. It was unclear what relationship Price had with her companion or who had been driving the vehicle, they said. Sheriff’s deputies and a gang squad from the Compton police department had initially surrounded the abandoned house where it was believed between one and three suspects were barricaded, police said. But police later determined Sunday morning the suspects fled prior to their arrival, Sheriff’s deputy Richard Pena said. Drug, gang and homicide detectives remained in the area and continued to investigate, he said. Police were questioning several witnesses and expected to detain some of them, but no arrests had been reported. Price died of gunshot wounds to her upper torso a short time after arriving at a local hospital, Yates said. She was the owner of a Los Angeles-area beauty salon, worked as a personal assistant to her two sisters, and was mother of three children, Williams’ family attorney Keven Davis told Reuters. “Obviously all in the family are very devastated and shocked by this news,” Davis said, adding that family members were on their way to Los Angeles. Family spokeswoman Raymone Bain told Reuters that Price’s tennis pro sisters had been out of town when they heard the news. “Venus was on the East (US) Coast and Serena was in Toronto filming a movie,” she said. Investigators were trying to determine why Price and her companion were in the neighbourhood, a moderate and low-income area with primarily Latino and black residents. Many homes have bars on their windows. Price was not a resident of Compton but lived in Corona, some 34 km to the east. Witnesses on the scene said they considered the area generally safe, but they noted a recent uptick in local shootings. Venus Williams, 23, and Serena Williams who will turn 22 on September 26, are the youngest of five daughters of Richard and Oracene Williams, who are divorced. The family spent their early years in the Compton area but later moved to Florida where the two tennis champions attended a training camp for the most promising young players. Serena Williams is the No. 3 female tennis player in the world. Venus, the No. 6 female tennis player in the world, is the winner of two Wimbledon and two US Open singles titles.— Reuters |
