Balaji’s 5-wkt haul in vain
Bangalore, September 10 After setting a challenging target of 277 runs in 50 overs, with fine half centuries by Rohan Gavaskar and Sridharan Sriram and Sachin Tendulkar’s 45, India ‘A’ restricted the Seniors to 249 for eight in 50 overs. Chasing under lights, the Seniors were struggling at 86 for four in the 20th over before Hemang Badani (73) and Sanjay Bangar (66) raised their hopes with a 114-run stand for the fifth wicket. Sourav Ganguly’s team required 100 runs from the last 10 overs, but Badani’s deparature in the 42nd over with the total on 200 sniffed out all their hopes. Badani’s 79 ball knock was studded with seven fours. Bangar was out in the 47th over, and his 66 runs came from 95 balls with two fours and a six. The Seniors were in early trouble when Parthiv Patel departed for a duck in the very first over. Soon, promising talent Ambatti Rayudu was run out for two, with only seven runs on the board. Ganguly and V V S Laxman tried to steady the boat but failed to get the momentum going. Trying to step up the run-rate, Ganguly holed out after making 27 off 35 balls with three fours, leaving the side struggling at 39 for three. Therafter, Laxman joined forces with Bangar and the two added 47 runs for the fourth wicket before Tendulkar trapped Laxman leg before. Earlier, speedster Lakshmipati Balaji grabbed three wickets in a menacing opening spell to have India A tottering at 66 for three. But master blaster Sachin Tendulkar rescued the team with a 65-ball 45 which included four fours. Sridharan Sriram (76) and Rohan Gavaskar (79 not out) then took charge of the proceedings to steer the side to a good total at the M A Chinnaswamy Stadium here. Gavaskar and Sriram put on 126 runs for the fifth wicket, frustrating the bowling attack which had the likes of Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh. The duo came together when Anil Kumble led India ‘A’ were 111 for four wickets in the 22nd over. Sriram, who hit four fours in his 83-ball knock, eventually fell to Balaji in the 46th over, miscuing a hit and holing out to Ganguly at mid-on.

Specialist keeper needed: Kapil
New Delhi, September 10 “He (Dravid) is the best person to judge it. If he is not happy that means he is not happy. We need regular players for the team — be it a batsman, bowler or wicketkeeper. A makeshift option cannot continue for long,” Kapil told reporters here today. Vice-captain Dravid, who is likely to continue in his dual role of a wicketkeeper-batsman in the upcoming tri-series against New Zealand and Australia, had said recently in Bangalore that any one of the talented youngsters — Parthiv Patel, V.S. Thilak Naidu and Ajay Ratra — could be considered for the job as they have been shaping up well. Kapil said the upcoming Test series against New Zealand would provide a lot of excitement to the people in the country since India would be keen to give Kiwis a dose of their own medicine. “People are very keenly waiting for the series to begin. They saw India losing to New Zealand last year and then losing in the World Cup final. Everyone is hungry for a win. “India need to play the same way New Zealand performed at home to beat them last year,” he said. Kapil evaded a direct reply to a query whether the decision of the government to allow the Indian junior team to play in Pakistan could augur well for restoration of cricketing ties between the two countries at senior level. Kapil also indicated that he was not keen on taking up an assignment for the cricket board. — PTI |
Sehwag named Delhi skipper New Delhi, September 10 The senior selection committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), comprising chairman Chetan Chauhan and convener Sunil Dev, besides other members, have invited 45 players for the selection trials for the coming Ranji Trophy season. The selection trials will begin on September 20 at the Nehru Stadium. The DDCA, in a bid to pump in ‘young blood’, has decided not to renew the contract of coach Bishan Singh Bedi. Bedi’s one-time protege Madan Lal will take his place. The DDCA vice-president Chetan Chauhan and sports secretary Sunil Dev said it had been decided not to renew Bedi’s contract after the expiry of his three-year term last season itself. They cited Bedi’s own lack of fitness, his late arrivals for training sessions, and his generally lackadaisical attitude as the reasons for the DDCA opting for a replacement, and a younger and fitter Madan Lal was found suitable for the job. Sunil Dev said Madan will be offered a two-year contract. Interestingly though, Delhi had qualified for the Ranji Trophy semi-final, under Bedi’s guidance, after a gap of nearly a decade. The following are the other probables called for trials: Akash Chopra, Gautam Gambhir, Pradeep Chawla, Abhishek Sharma, Sarandeep Singh, Amit Bhandari, Arun Singh, Rahul Sanghvi, Varun Kumar, Harender Chaudhary, Vivek Khurana, Ashish Nehra, Saket Bhatia, Vishal Sharma, Siddharth Verma, Sanjay Gill, Ranjan Gupta, Pankaj Joshi, Kuldeep Rawat, Sunil Joshi, Sonu Vaid, Tarun Gupta, Yogesh Sachdeva, Kesar Chaudhary, Rajiv Rathore, Rajat Bhatia, N S Negi, Jitender Solanki, Salil Oberoi, Dilip T T, Mukesh Diwan, Param Vir Nagar, Dhruv Mohan, Abhinav Bali, Shikhar Dhawan, Puru Raj Singh, Nitin Punia, Raja

Lee predicts ‘tough’ triangular series New Delhi, September 10 Though Brett Lee claims to have clocked 100-mile speed in the 2003 World Cup (160.3kph to be exact) he wants to do it consistently once again, though the International Cricket Council does not recognise such ‘feats’. Brett Lee predicted that the triangular series, involving India, New Zealand and Australia, which will follow India’s two-Test series against the Kiwis next month, would be a ‘tough’ contest. He also made the regulation comment of India boasting of one of the finest batting line-ups, and the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Saurav Ganguly being “world class batsmen who are difficult to be dislodged”. Brett Lee also had high praise for Indian quickies Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra, and observed that wickets played a decisive role in producing fast bowlers. On this score, he admitted that India lacked behind and needed to make faster pitches to produce quick bowlers of interntional standard, who would be able to hold on their own in any situation. When asked about the often-heard complaint of some fast bowlers being ‘chukers’, Brett Lee remarked that it could sometimes be an ‘optical illusion’. Brett Lee is touring the country, ahead of the triangular series, as part of the “ESPN presents Scorpio Speedster With Timex” contest, which will be held in various cities of the country from September 13 to 21, starting with Delhi. The contest will then move on to Chandigarh (September 18 and 19), Lucknow (Sept. 24-25), Hyderabad (October 3-4), Chennai (Oct. 11-12), Bangalore (Oct. 16-17), Kolkata (Oct. 29-30), Ahmedabad (Nov 8-9), Pune (Nov 13-14) and Mumbai (Nov. 19-20). International Management Group South Asia managing director Ravi Krishnan said the event has its very heart a dream—to give that unrecognised talent a platform to achieve national and international recognition. The fastest bowler in each region will travel to Mumbai to compete in a Grand National Final on November 21. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of Rs 75,000 plus 9 chance to attend the Australian Institute of Sports Cricket Academy in Adelaide. Brett Lee lauded the concept and added that “with luck, it would be a big boost to all speed merchants in India”. He hoped that “some good fast bowling talent will be uncovered which we are going to be facing in the years to come. I will follow the results with interest”. Brett Lee, who first came to India as an 18-year-old, is quite familiar with the Indian conditions, and he hopes to give a torrid time to the Indian batting stars in the triangular series. “I am keenly looking forward to the triangular series”, noted the Australian bowling spearhead. He said the basic idea of the contest was to prove to the rest of the world that India had genuine fast bowling talent and it was just a question of unearthing them. Brett Lee, who has lately been ‘the enforcer’ of the Australian team, has claimed 125 wickets in 33 Tests and 133 wickets in 71 one-day internationals. He has also notched up two Test half centuries. But it is more in his role as a “game turner” that Lee is best known, his ability to turn a match on its head with a show of devastating spell of express bowling. His superb bowling played a major role in Australia winning the World Cup. |
Indian spikers fail to enter semis
Beijing, September 10 The Indian team blew away a one set advantage to go down 23-25 25-20 25-22 23-25 12-25 against the strong Iranian side late last night. This was India’s second successive loss after their 1-3 defeat against Japan on Monday. However, India can still make it to the qualifying tournaments for the Athens Olympics. They need to win their 5-8 classification matches against Pakistan, Japan and Kazakhstan to be in the race for a place. “We lost the second match in succession due to some last-minute errors committed by our players,” team manager B.K. Ojha told PTI after the match. “It was a yet another close encounter. I wish my boys were a bit more careful in the last minutes of the games,” he said. Hosts China, South Korea, Iran and Australia entered the semifinals and will vie for the title in matches to be played from tomorrow. In another match, defending champions South Korea beat Japan 25-23 25-19 33-35 26-24 in a second-round group F match to eliminate the latter from entering the knock-out stage of the championship. The match between the two traditional Asian powerhouses was exciting as both the teams played some superb volleyball. The Japanese led 22-21 in the first set and even surged ahead of the Koreans 20-18 in the second, but faded both times. Kato Yoichi saved Japan from losing the match at 3-0 when his back-row attack leveled the score at 33-33. Then he had two consecutive brilliant services which destroyed South Korea’s receiving, allowing team mate Usami Daisuke for two easy kills that secured the set for Japan. The two sides traded leads to tie it at 24-all in the fourth set. After Suk Jin-wook’s kill gave South Korea the edge, Japanese Daisuke set a bad ball to surrender the match. Japanese head coach Tanaka Mikiyasu was obviously disappointed with the result. “We came here for the title, but now we are out of top four,” Mikiyasu said. “We’ve got a lot of problems to solve, especially in serving.” “I am very happy that we can beat Japan when we are without two veteran players,” said South Korean head coach Cho Joo-Hyun. China kept a clean sheet at the championship after beating Australia in straight sets here yesterday. The home side, which finished third in the last Asian championship in 2001, powered past the Australians 25-23 25-17 25-17 for their fourth consecutive 3-0 victory. The first set was hotly contested while China maintained a narrow lead most of the way for a 24-23 edge. Shi Hairong, who led China with 11 kills, smashed a ball home to award China the opener. Australia, who remained unbeaten before the match, stayed within 15-13 and 18-16 in the second set. However, China ran off seven of the last eight points to make it 2-0. The Australians went down tamely in the third set.

team not to train in Singapore
New Delhi, September 10 “We had requested the government to give permission to the team to go to Singapore. But now we have changed our mind since a SARS case has been detected there,” IHF protocol officer Suresh Sharma told PTI here today. Earlier the camp at the National Stadium here was scheduled to continue till September 14 before the team’s departure for Singapore the next day. The move to send the team to Singapore was taken as the players would have got the opportunity to practice under lights since there is no floodlit astroturf stadium in India and all the matches in the eight-nation Asia Cup would be played at night.
