Second defeat for Seniors Bangalore, September 11 Chasing a victory target of 339 in 50 overs at an asking rate of 6.78, India Seniors ended with 275 for seven. With this second defeat — they had lost to India “A” by 27 runs yesterday — India Seniors are eliminated from the tournament. After a rest day tomorrow, India “A” will meet India “B” in what could now be termed as an inconsequential match on Saturday — at the best, a dress rehearsal for the title clash between them the next day. Chasing such a huge total was never going to be easy. the 113 run partnership between Hemang Badani (not out 61) (54 balls, 4 fours, one six) and Sanjay Bangar for the sixth wicket in 101 balls only delayed the invitable after India Seniors were reduced to 150 for five in 30 overs. India Seniors lost an early wicket when A.T. Rayudu was sna pped up by S.S. Das off Agarkar for four. Parthiv Patel, who opened the innings, played some attractive strokes but could not stay long. The India wicket-keeper hit six fours on his way to an enterprising 30, made off 29 balls, before giving a straight-forward catch to Yuvraj Singh at gully. At 49 for two, Ganguly joined Reetinder Singh Sodhi, who was well set then, and the duo tried to keep the momentum going, taking the team’s score past 100 in the 18th over. Olympic
preparatory committee formed New Delhi, September 11 A notable omission from the committee is Mr Randhir Singh, who wears too many hats in sports administration. Randhir Singh is not only the lone representative from India in the International Olympic Committee, but also the secretary-general of the Olympic Council of Asia as well as the Indian Olympic Association. The “terms of reference” of the committee is that it will be empowered to make recommendations on all matters pertaining to the preparation of the Indian contingent for the Olympic Games. It will be authorised to visit any training or coaching camp to evaluate the quality and progress of training and to invite any officer to assist them in discharging their functions, including representatives of national federations. The committee may establish its own procedures and practices with regard to quorum, voting system, procedures, the absence of the chairman and establishment of sub committees etc. It will start functioning on the day of its constitution and ceases to work on September 30, 2004 or on submission of its report to Government on performance of the Indian contingent in Olympics, whichever is earlier. |

Robbery derails Anju’s preparations
New Delhi, September 11 The incident happened on Tuesday morning when Anju’s bag went missing at the Charolety Stadium, near Paris University, where she was training with her husband and coach Robert Bobby George for the Monaco meet. “We were to book the flight tickets to Monaco after the training session and the bag contained all the documents, passports and credit cards,” Anju, India’s first medallist in a World Athletic Championships told PTI over phone from Paris today. Anju, who won a bronze medal in the World Championships at Paris late last month, and Bobby were training in the city for the all-important Monaco meet where the cream of world athletics will be seen in action. Taken aback by the robbery, Anju said the stadium was almost empty when they were winding up the session by about 11.30 am. “As usual we kept the bag at a place where we could see it from. But it disappeared from the middle of the ground by the time we finished jogging around the track,” Anju said. “The Police is yet to crack the case,” a distraught Anju said “We had noticed two youngsters moving around but we thought they were security guards. But later the stadium officials said they were Fire Force personnel,” Anju said. The star athlete said the incident came as a real shock as the stadium had tight security in place including closed circuit cameras. Bobby George said the robbery had somewhat derailed Anju’s training as the schedule had gone haywire in the last two days what with running around to arrange money, new passports and tickets. “We will train one last time here in the evening before boarding the flight to Monaco tomorrow morning,” Bobby said. While the embassy arranged for temporary passports for Anju and Bobby, the Sports Ministry pitched in by sanctioning some emergency fund to help out the star couple. Anju had produced her season’s best leap of 6.70m to win the historic bronze in Paris behind France’s Eunice Barber and world No.1 Tatyana Kotova. — PTI |
Ronaldinho seals Brazil win Manaus, September 11 Brazil, who had been openly talking about putting on a show and performing tricks before the game, started with eight of the players who began last year’s World Cup final against Germany in Japan. But instead of the promised footballing feast, the frustrated crowd witnessed an unappetising encounter of few real chances and responded by jeering the five-times champions off the field. Ecuador were without injured 35-year-old captain Alex Aguinaga and key striker Agustin Delgado, who has a long-term knee injury. But, while not brimming with talent, the team coached by Colombian Hernan Dario Gomez played neat, intelligent football and caused the hosts some nervous moments in the second half. The result left Brazil top of the South American World Cup qualifying group with six points from two games while Ecuador, aiming to qualify for their second successive World Cup, have three points.
ASUNCION: Striker Jose Cardozo hit a hat-trick for rejuvenated Paraguay in a 4-1 demolition of Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier. Javier Chevanton fired Uruguay ahead direct from a free kick in the 24th minute but Cardozo replied three minutes later. Carlos Paredes headed Paraguay ahead early in the half before Cardozo added two more yesterday. It was a dramatic change of fortunes for both sides. Paraguay had begun their campaign by losing 4-1 in Peru while Uruguay got underway by thrashing Bolivia 5-0. Despite an emphatic opening victory, flamboyant Uruguay coach Juan Ramon Carrasco made six changes to his starting line-up and dropped the entire midfield, including Inter Milan’s Alvaro Recoba who captained the team on Sunday and had an outstanding match. Recoba eventually came on in the 61st minute when Paraguay were already 3-1 ahead. Despite the re-shuffles, the Sky Blues had the best of the opening exchanges as they took control in midfield. Manchester United striker Diego Forlan had an excellent chance when he escaped the defence but Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar, chosen ahead of the more experienced Ricardo Tavarelli, saved at his feet. LA PAZ: Striker Joaquin Botero hit a hat-trick for Bolivia in a 4-0 demolition of Colombia at high altitude. Bolivia, thrashed 5-0 by Uruguay at sea level in their opening World Cup qualifier on Sunday, over-ran a Colombia side yesterday who finished with 10 men after defender Ivan Ramiro Cordoba was sent-off. The Inter Milan player gave away an early penalty and was dismissed in the 63rd minute for a violent tackle on Limberg Mendez. Bolivia have three points from two games in the single South American group while Colombia, beaten 2-1 by the world champions in Barranquilla on Sunday, have lost their opening two matches. — Reuters |

TFA Blue defeat Bangladesh 2-1 Jamshedpur, September 11 ITB began in a whirlwind fashion and created umpteen openings in the first half making the rival defence totter and shake as they went into overdrive. ITB drew first blood in the 18th minute. A well-constructed move from the right flank resulted in the ball striking the cross piece before rebounding into play only to be latched on to by the ITB’s opportunistic midfielder Khemtang Paite and place it into the net (1-0). It was, however, a story of missed opportunities in the first half with Manahar Dharani and captain Lekini Suiting missing sitters. While Manahar failed to time his head in the 28th minute, Suiting failed to place the ball home from close range in the 40th minute. Cashing on the host team’s complacency, Bangladesh, against the run of play, managed to get into the game two minutes before the breather. Bangladesh striker Md Aower Hussain collected a ball on the top of the box and let loose a pile driver that deceived ITB goalkeeper Arup Kumar Baidya to bring life back into the match as the visitors restorted parity(1-1). — UNI |
