MCD to provide maternity medical services at doorstep

New Delhi, August 26
Chairman of the Standing Committee of the MCD Ram Babu Sharma said that priority would be given to provide transparent and corruption-free administration in the corporation.

He said that the population of the Capital had increased manifold in the last 10 years, resulting in the hospitals and other government-run health institutions being burdened. Providing health services to the citizens of the Capital was the obligatory function of the corporation and it was in the process of providing maternity medical services at the doorstep of Delhiites.

Speaking at the inauguration function of a Maternity Home at Yamuna Vihar in the trans-Yamuna area, he said that the Congress-run corporation would try its level best to improve the condition of government hospitals and dispensaries so that people preferred to get treatment from these institutions instead of private hospitals.

The Maternity Home was inaugurated by the Mayor of Delhi, Mr Ashok Kumar Jain, who said that the hospital was constructed at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

Northern Railway roll past FCI

New Delhi, August 26
Northern Railway rolled past Food Corporation of India (FCI), North Zone 3-1 in a Super League match of the Delhi State Hockey League for Institutions, sponsored by Punjab National Bank, at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

Vikramjit Singh scored the first goal in the 15th minute when he converted a penalty corner. Rajesh Kumar added the second goal in the 41st minute, when he also converted a penalty corner. Brijesh completed the tally for Railways.

Navbir pulled off the consolation goal for FCI.

FCI, Headquarters crushed Indian Airlines 7-0, after leading by 2-0 at half time.

Prabhakar Singh, who scored five goals, including a hattrick, stole the spotlight. Amarnath Yadav opened the account in the fourth minute. Prabhakar scored the second, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh goals while Ankur Chaturvedi struck home the third goal.

Academy Club defeated Delhi Tigers 5-1 in the Delhi State Hockey League for Clubs. Four goals materialised in the first half when Baljeet struck a brace, Sunil and Sandeep scored the other two goals.

Surinder completed the tally for Academy Club while Mukesh Dhupar scored the consolation goal for Delhi Tigers.

Punjab Hawks beat Tribal Sports Club 2-0 in the second match. Harpreet scored the first goal while Parshant slotted in the second goal.

The other matches of the league will be played on August 28.

Chautala urges PM to set up Sports Welfare Fund

Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala urged Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to set up a Sports Welfare Fund and include sports as an essential subject in the curriculum of schools, and make it mandatory for school children to take part in at least one discipline of sports.

Mr Chautala, speaking at the Sports Congress organised by the All India Council of Sports said that the education system should have a universal sports policy for the entire nation. He said that physical education was being taught in 11th and 12th classes only and that too in theory. Therefore, the students were not being provided practical knowledge of sports. Also, the teacher meant for training students in various sports were being deployed to maintain discipline in schools.

Mr Chautala said that the Sports Welfare Fund should be set up by the Central Government to provide financial assistance to the sportspersons. He said apart from giving incentives to sportspersons, their coaches and umpires should also be provided opportunities to improve their skills.

Hindustan, Shahdara record wins in DSA League

Hindustan Club and Shahdara recorded victories in Group A preliminary league matches of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Senior Division Football League Championship on Tuesday.

Last year’s runners-up Hindustan Club scored a solitary goal victory against Simla Youngs at the Ambedkar Stadium. Hindustan have earned five points from three matches while Simla Youngs have one point from two matches.

Hindustan Club could have scored in the second minute but their foreign recruit Cedric failed to convert a spot kick. In the second half, Hindustan scored the match-winner when Saleem blasted the ball into the net.

In another Group A match at the Ambedkar Stadium, Moonlight were held to a goalless draw by Goans. Moonlight have earned three points from as many games while Goans have one point from two games.

Shahdara scored a 3-1 victory against Delhi Police at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Shahdara, who led by 2-0 at half time, scored their goals through medio Rakesh Kohli and inside-left Promodh Rawat. Outside-left Sidharth Bhandari enhanced the lead to 3-0. Police captain Mahesh Bisht reduced the margin in the 35th minute. Shahdara have five points from three games while Police have three points from two games.

Salwan, Ravindra School advance

Deadly bowling by Deepak Rai (3 for 16) helped defending champions Salwan Boys School beat N C Jindal Public School by eight wickets in a league match of the third Ramjas Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Ramjas ground. Deepak received the man of the match award.

Ravindra School beat Ramjas School No 5 by 255 runs. A strokeful 90, studded with eight fours and three sixes, by Sunny helped Ravindra score a big win.

Sunny was adjudged the man of the match.

Electing to bat, N C Jindal scored 51 all out in 23.1 overs.

Ramjas No 5: 77 all out in 18.3 overs (Sunny Sharma 30, Sandeep Karki 3 for 24, Gaurav Sharma 3 for 12, Pankaj Sethi 3 for 24).

MNSS swimmers dominate championship

The swimmers from the Motilal Nehru School of Sports Rai (MNSS) dominated the first day’s events of three-day 37th Haryana State Swimming Championship, which was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Balwan Singh on Monday at the MNSS campus.

As many as 450 swimmers in different categories are participating in the Championship.

Men Section: 400 mt Free Style: Govind (Jind), Naresh (Rohtak), Sandip (Jhajjar).

Backstroke: Jagbir (Rohtak), Kamaljit (Sirsa), Pradeep (Bhiwani).

50 mt Butterfly: Jagdish (Hissar), Praveen (Sirsa), Ajai (H. police).

Boys Section: 400 mt Free Style-first group: Pankaj (Panchkula), Kartik (Hisar), Devender (Jind).
