still untraced Chandigarh, August 2 Mr Pradeep Punia, an advocate attached to the Punjab AG’s office, who is a friend of
Rajender, said that search for him had now become a search for his body. Mr Punia, who returned this morning from the place where two cars carrying Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda and his companions, including
Rajender, got washed away in the current of Peeli river, said that a thorough search had been carried out in the river with the help of fishing net but the body could not be found. People keeping themselves afloat with the help of inflated rubber tubes, had also minutely searched both banks of the river. The Peeli river meets the Ganges after a short distance and today a search is being carried out at the Bijnaur barrage on the Ganges for the body, Mr Punia said. It is anticipated that the body may have got carried in that direction. Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda and nine others were going to Bajpur in Uttaranchal when their cars met with the accident.
Rajender’s immediate family comprises his mother, wife and two young children. Many of his friends, including Mr Punia, said that they could not gather the courage of meeting his family members. Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda himself is still staying put at Hardwar hoping to get some news about his cousin who is only about 42. Rajender looked after media relations of cousin Bhupinder Singh. |
Six convicted of triple murder Hisar, August 2 Five of the 12 accused — Chiman Lal, Rajinder, Jagdish, Karan and Lal Chand — were acquitted by giving them benefit of doubt. One more accused Kuldeep was acquitted of murder charges but was convicted under the Arms Act. The sentence would be handed over on August 5. The case involved murder of three residents of the village — Dalip, Ram Murti and Krishan — while they were returning home from their fields. They were all shot dead at point-blank range. The incident took place on January 2, 2001. According to the prosecution, the cause of the murder was a dispute over a water channel. The three victims had filed a case of manhandling against the convicts following the dispute. A court had sentenced the convicts to three years imprisonment. However, they shot dead their three rivals while they were on bail granted by the high court in that case. |
Three die in mishaps Hisar, August 2 A person was killed at Hansi near here yesterday. According to the police, Ishwar Singh, a resident of Sisar village, was crossing the Hisar-Delhi national highway near Government Senior Secondary Girls School when a Haryana Roadways bus crushed him to death. The Hansi police has registered a case of negligence driving against the driver. In another incident a woman was killed near Kheder village last evening. According to the police, Poonam Devi and her husband were going to Barwala on a moped. As soon as they reached near the village she fell down from the moped and received serious injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on way to a hospital. A person was killed at Chikanwas village near here last night when a vehicle crushed him to death. The Agroha police has registered a case in this connection. |
Armed persons attack family, kill baby Fatehabad, August 2 According to Babu Ram, father of the kid, the assailants came to his residence and asked about the whereabouts of his uncles, Hem Raj and Om Parkash. When his family members expressed ignorance about it, Deepa allegedly hit his handicapped wife Resham with a gun butt. His son Bhagat, who was sitting on the lap of his mother, fell on the floor. He received some injuries and died this morning. The assailants, according to Babu, also injured his mother Ram Piari and two other family members. Ram Piari was admitted to the local hospital. |

3 suspended for prisoner’s escape Hisar, August 2 The 15-year-old inmate had escaped by jumping from the roof of the jail, where he had gone on the pretext of sweeping the roof. The escape went unnoticed for several hours as a judge was visiting the jail at the time. His absence was noticed during the evening head count. Ajay had been lodged there after he was charged in a criminal case a few months ago. |
Haryana spends 324 cr on providing water Hisar, August 2 He was addressing a public meeting at Kallar Bhaini village near here after inaugurating a water works project there. He said that a new scheme to provide potable water to rural areas had been envisaged under which a village would have to deposit only 10 per cent of the cost and the rest of the amount would be provided by the government. Later, Mr Chautala also inaugurated another water works project at Sarhera village. |

Roadways men gherao bus stand Yamunanagar, August 2 Mr Hari Narain Sharma, state president of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union and Mr Balwant Rana, state vice-president of the mahasangh, while addressing the agitated employees demanded the withdrawal of the case against the bus driver.The police had registered a case against Babu Ram, the driver, on July 28 on the charge of crushing a youth to death on the Ladwa-Indri road. The union leaders alleged that it was a false case as a truck was involved in the accident. The leaders stated that they had tried to convince the Ladwa police in this connection, which allegedly misbehaved with them. The gherao continued till 5.30 p.m. The union has formed a committee of six persons to take stock of the situation. Till the filing of story a meeting was going on between Sub Divisional Magistrate, Jagadhri, Renu Phulia, General Manager, Haryana Roadways, Yamunanagar depot, and the union leaders. |
Football-sized tumour removed Yamunanagar, August 2 According to the information, Ms Neelam Goel of Gangoh town in Saharanpur district was brought to the hospital in a serious condition. After conducting tests, Dr Anil Aggarwal operated upon her and removed a “football-sized” tumour from her uterus. The patient is reported to be out of danger. Dr Aggarwal said such tumours can cause excessive bleeding and can become cancerous sometimes. Dr Aggarwal has been honoured with a President’s award for excellence in surgery. |

1.40 lakh stolen AMBALA:
A packet containing Rs 1.40 lakh was stolen from a Maruti van this
afternoon. The incident took place on the Nicholson road in Ambala
Sadar. Mr S Gupta, who works as deputy manager, had kept the packet
containing the cash in the Maruti van. The van was being driven by a
driver. They stopped to have fruit juice at about 12 noon. While Mr
Gupta went to the juice counter, the van driver kept on sitting in the
van. After he returned from the counter, Mr Gupta realised that the
packet containing Rs 1.40 lakh was missing. A person is believed to
have told the police that he had seen two boys near the van. The
police is looking into the matter. |
