Panchayat poll peaceful
More than 70 per cent turnout

Contrary to expectations of large-scale rigging and violence by the Congress during the panchayat poll in this politically important district, polling passed off peacefully with no untoward incident reported till late in the evening.

400 of 404 Alipur voters cast ballot
Amloh, June 29
Villagers showed a keen interest in the panchayat elections today with nearly 90 percent polling reported in 77 villages out of the 95 in Amloh block.

The claims of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) of going allout for facing stiff competition from competitors in the telecom sector have been contested by the nigam’s subscribers in the city.

Government rejection of MC decision dictatorial: BJP
Ludhiana, June 29
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken exception to the Punjab Government’s decision to reject the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation resolution on waiving the interest charges on the arrears of house and water taxes. It alleged that the Congress government was acting in a dictatorial manner by rejecting a resolution passed unanimously in the House by the elected representatives of the local body.

Cong welcomes raids on Badals

Several Congress leaders have supported the Vigilance Bureau for conducting raids on the properties of Mr Parkash Singh Badal and his family with the aim of unearthing what they call “ill-gotten wealth”.

Visually challenged excel in BA I exam
Ludhiana, June 29
Those with determination can fight all handicaps and come out winners. This has been proved by a visually handicapped duo of brother and sister, Vivek Monga and Anu Monga, who have stood first and third, respectively, in Ramgarhia Girls College in BA I examination conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh. Vivek secured 627 marks and Anu scored 615 marks out of 800.

Hundreds take PMET
Ludhiana, June 29
Hundreds of students aspiring to be doctors appeared for the PMET conducted by Baba Farid University today at eight centres of Punjab Agricultural University here.
Hundreds of anxious parents from all over Punjab were waiting eagerly for their wards to come out of the examination halls.

Mosquitoes breed under admn’s nose
Ludhiana, June 29
Even as the Health authorities in the city are busy observing “anti-malaria month”, mosquitoes continue to breed right outside the local Civil Hospital. While the administration claims that malaria has been effectively controlled and practically all mosquito infested areas have been neutralised, the city’s first case of suspected dengue was reported from the Bhagwan Ram Charitable Hospital.

Skin infections on the rise
Ludhiana, June 29
With the hot and humid season at its peak in the city, there has been an increase in the number of patients suffering from skin infections. “Most of the patients are complaining of acne, fungal infections, prickly heat, boils, itching and redness of skin.
