Registrar’s office holds back sale deeds

Hundreds of plot holders have been making rounds of the local Registrar’s office to procure sale deeds. The documents are reportedly being held back by the tehsildar concerned as the allottees are being asked to deposit additional registration fee as per to the existing market rates.

Calling good Samaritans for poor girl’s aid

Sangeeta and her 32-year-old elder sister Madhubala had gone to visit a temple on the outskirts of Patiala on April 26. While returning home, their two-wheeler was hit head-on by a police Jeep. Seriously injured, both the sisters were taken to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, by the eyewitnesses.

MC enforces revised water, sewerage cess

In the wake of upward revision of water and sewerage charges for all urban local bodies by the state government, the Municipal Corporation has given effect to hike in water and sewerage charges for the city population for the year 2003-2004.

585 development projects under way: Minister

The government is committed to providing all basic amenities, including sewerage, drinking water, streetlights and, roads, in all urban areas and in this context another installment of Rs 61 crore have been released to different municipal corporations and councils for undertaking these projects.

Rescued mentally challenged to be shifted
Ludhiana, June 4
Four mentally challenged persons, who were rescued from a charitable ashram near Laddowal by the district administration recently, are all set to be shifted to the mental asylum at Amritsar for further treatment.

The World Environment Day theme selected for 2003 is ‘Water — Two billion people are dying for it’. According to a survey, water-related diseases kill a child every eight seconds worldwide and are responsible for 80 per cent of all illnesses and deaths in the developing world. The statistics are even more disturbing which show that one among every six persons is without regular access to safe drinking water.

Two killed in mishap

Two persons were killed and another was injured in a road accident near Markfed Vanaspati Mill on the GT Road, Khanna, last night. According to information, three persons were coming from Delhi to Ludhiana in a car after purchasing electronic goods.

Lure of miracle lands him in jail
Ludhiana, June 4
A migrant from UP, who thought that a ‘tabeez’ would change his life for the better, landed in the police lock-up on Tuesday. The Division No 3 police arrested one Pawan Kumar, hailing from Qila Bazar, Rae Bareilly, and currently living in the Transport Nagar here, on the charge of collecting the mortal remains of dead bodies from cremation ground. He has been booked under Section 297 of the IPC.

BCA (I) result: KCW students stand out

As the results of BCA I examinations were declared, it was another occasion for students and Principal of Khalsa College for Women (KCW) to rejoice. The KCW, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, marked another success by bagging four out of first five positions in Panjab University, Chandigarh.

“My birthday falls on May 30 and after celebrating it, I go abroad for my concerts to escape from heat of summer months. But this is the first time I am spending summers here. Actually, Ms Sapna Nihar and Ms Sangeet Kushwaha, members of the Kala Sewa Sangam, came to Delhi and requested me and my son Prateek to conduct a workshop for students in Ludhiana. I became emotional and yielded to their request.

9-year old becomes first ‘toonstar’ from city
Ludhiana, June 4
Nine-year-old Navneet Kaur Makkar, a resident of BRS Nagar, has won herself a fabulous opportunity to act along with Scooby-Doo, a popular cartoon network character, and Max, the king of the jungle, in a specially produced mini animation short. This special animation will be aired on Cartoon Network later this year.

Anti-tobacco exhibition at Hero DMC

To encourage the staff of Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI), to contribute in eradicating the menace of smoking from society by creating awareness about its ill effects, a poster-making competition-cum- exhibition was organised by the staff of Hero DMC Heart Institute team here yesterday. The event was specially organised to mark an anti-tobacco day.

Rare surgery performed
Ludhiana, June 4
Six-year old Shubham had difficulty opening his mouth. He was not able to eat properly or speak normally, had facial deformity and was facing physical, psychological and social trauma. He was suffering from a peculiar temporal mandible (jaw) joint deformity caused due to fusion of joint with the base of the skull, generally the result of a neglected trauma.

Lotey rejoins as DSO today
Ludhiana, June 4
Mr S.L. Lotey, a senior Punjab sports officer, is joining as District Sports Officer, Ludhiana, on June 5. He replaces Mr Harpal Singh Kanwal who has been posted at Hoshiarpur. Mr Lotey has earlier also worked as DSO here for more than three years (January 1, 1999 to May 6, 2002).
