Mrs Kashmir Kaur, one of the five women “chosen” for self-immolation in protest against the attitude of the Congress government towards the 1984 riot victims, today flayed the government for its alleged doublespeak on the PUDA housing policy for riot victims in Punjab.

Two killed in accident on Banur road

Admn notifies bylaws on property tax
Chandigarh, June 4
Property tax on commercial, industrial and institutional land and buildings has become effective from May 7 with the Chandigarh Administration today notifying the bylaws for property tax at 5 per cent of the annual rateable rent (prescribed by the MC).

No respite from heatwave
Chandigarh, June 4
Residents of the city and surrounding areas had no respite today from the heatwave. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 44.4°C today as against 44°C yesterday. The night temperature here was also high at 29.4°C.

Labourers seek Governor’s protection

Chandigarh, June 4
Seeking liberation from a life of penury, torture and inhuman treatment, 22 adults and 12 children, who had been kept as bonded labourers for the past 10 months by a brick-kiln owner at Agampur in Anandpur Sahib, have sought protection from the Punjab Governor and Chief Minister and the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC).

Man cheated of Rs 1.50 lakh
Chandigarh, June 4
Mr Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Pinjore, reported to the police that Mohan Dass, Blossom Society, Sector 48, had cheated him of Rs 1.50 lakh. Mohan Dass had taken the money for sending Sanjeev abroad but he neither kept his promise nor returned the money.

PU to have working women hostel

Adding to the list of existing facilities on the campus, Panjab University will soon have hostel facilities for working women. The hostel has been primarily earmarked for the staff of the non-teaching wing. In addition, the hostel will also provide day-care facilities for children of the staff during duty hours.

A local court today imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on singer Babbu Mann for his failure to appear in court in a case filed against him by two city residents, who have sought a ban on the public performance of his song “Chak lau revolver rifle kabja laina hai”.

Warrant issued against Bhardwaj again
Chandigarh, June 4
Acting on a CBI plea, a local court today again issued a non-bailable warrant against suspended UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class) S.S. Bhardwaj in a corruption case registered against him by the CBI. The warrant against Mr Bhardwaj was issued by UT Chief Judicial Magistrate C.L Mohal till June 8.

“I want to go in for films now as a number of young directors have entered the film world and are coming out with good movies and, moreover, models are going in for acting these days,” said Mehar Bhasin, one of the top models, who was in the town here today.

Administration to run cricket in UT

The Chandigarh Administration will henceforth have a major say in running the cricketing affairs in the Union Territory following Monday’s meeting at Kolkata between senior functionaries of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and government officials from 11 states and union territories where the game of cricket is not “very popular”.

Admn okays plan to beautify berms
Chandigarh, June 4
A high-level meeting of the Chandigarh Administration today approved a plan to entrust the beautification of all berms in the city to various developmental agencies without any charge. These agencies will develop and maintain the berms at their own expense and the Administration will allow them to put up their advertisements on a board of a specified size. In each sector, four boards have been allowed on both sides of the road at a distance of 200 metres each.

72 lakh for parks’ beautification

The Environment and City Beautification Committee of the Municipal Corporation here today passed around Rs 72 lakh worth of proposals for the improvement of parks in the city.

End CLS, say FCI employees

Demanding the abolition of the Contract Labour System (CLS) in the food procurement agencies and the withdrawal of anti-labour policies, the Food Corporation of India Workers’ Union, affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) today staged a massive dharna in front of the FCI office in Sector 17.

Two power purchase pacts signed
Chandigarh, June 4
In order to meet the demand of electricity in the summer months, the Chandigarh Administration today signed two power purchase agreements with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to purchase 15 MW electricity in the long run. The agreement was signed at the UT Secretariat.
