Replaced in housing society’s list by IAS officers

The names of seven local residents, each of whom has deposited between Rs 1.61 lakh and Rs 2.61 lakh, have been deleted from the list of original allottees of a cooperative housing society in Sector 49-D.

PU postpones fee hike
Chandigarh, June 3
Panjab University has deferred the fee hike for the academic session (2003-2004) as proposed by the Punjab Government recently.
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the local Syndics here today attended by DPIs of Punjab and the UT, except Mr Asok Goyal.

Man shot at, 2 held
Mullanpur-Garibdass, June 3
A cement dealer of the village, Bhupinder Kumar was shot at after he refused to give water to five brothers of the village who were allegedly in an inebriated condition. The brothers allegedly attacked him with swords and fired at him from a double-barrelled shotgun here last night.

Rehna fire: losses estimated at Rs 2 lakh

The district administration has prepared its report on the damage caused by the fire that broke out at Rehna village, near Raipur Rani, on June 1. According to the administration’s assessment, the damaged caused during the fire was estimated at Rs 2 lakh.

27-yr-old woman hangs self
Chandigarh, June 3
A 27-year-old woman, Neera, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her servant’s quarter accommodation in a house in Sector 36 here today. Her husband works as a domestic help in the house.

No extra classes, it’s vacation for teachers

The general house meeting of the Government School Teachers Union held at the Masjid ground in Sector 20, here today, was a happy affair following the decision of the UT Education Department to exempt them from taking extra classes during the summer vacation.

National awards for 15 teachers

Seven teachers from Haryana and four each from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh will be awarded National Awards for their contribution to academics and various other fields. These awards will be given by the President of India on September 5, 2003.

2 get RI for carrying substandard milk
Chandigarh, June 3
Two city residents were today sentenced to six months’ rigorous imprisonment under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act by a local court. The two were convicted and also fined Rs 1,000 by the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr C.L. Mohal, As per the prosecution, one of the accused was carrying 20 kg milk on his three-wheeler when a food inspector intercepted him.
