KU QUESTION PAPER LEAK Kurukshetra, May 12 This was stated by the district police chief, Mr Desraj Singh, at a press conference here today. He said a photocopy of BA (Part-II) Hindi question paper was seized from Vishal of Vishnu Colony here on April 10 by university security staff members and a case under Sections 420, 426 and 120B of the IPC was registered. Vishal and another student Vaibhav, told the police that they had purchased the photocopies of that Hindi paper from Mr Rajesh Malik, state president of the students wing of the Haryana Vikas Party. On the information given by a social worker, B.Sc. student Mahesh Kumar, alias Malha, of Israna village, first year student Sunil Lathwal of Vikas Nagar, Gohana, and Surinder, alias Chhinda, of the Assandh road, Panipat, and Bijender of Agondh, both chowkidars, were arrested. Confessing to the crime, Mahesh Kumar told the police that on March 26, he along with his friends Sunil, Jai Prakash Mahajan, Sukhpal and Mukesh approached Rajesh Malik at Kurukshetra University and asked him to manage the things because the annual examinations were drawing nearer and they had not prepared for the same so far. Rajesh Malik told them that annual examination question papers of the nearby examination centres were kept at the
I.B. College, Panipat, and they should make some arrangements to steal those. Mahesh Kumar informed him that
I.B. College’s chowkidars Chhinda and Vijender and the college laboratory assistant were his friends. They made a plan, according to which, Mahesh Kumar and Rajesh Malik met Ajit Singh and took keys of almirahs in which question papers were kept. They took the impression of the keys on a piece of soap. Both of them got prepared duplicate keys. On the night intervening April 30 and 31, in the presence of both the chowkidars, Mahesh Kumar and Rajesh Malik took out B.Sc. chemistry Ist year question paper from a packet by cutting the sealed tape, photocopied it on a photocopier of the college and put the paper into the packet. He re-sealed it by pasting the tape with the help of fevicol. They repeated the action to take out the question papers of B.A. final (English), and B.A. IInd (Hindi). The district police chief said both the chowkidars and Sunil Lathwal and Mahesh Kumar had been arrested and efforts were being made to arrest the other wanted culprits, including Rajesh Malik. |

Supporters of ex-MLA write to Kalam Rewari, May 12 Rao Abhey
Singh, who was thrice MLA from Rewari(twice during joint Punjab), is the father of the local MLA, Capt Ajay Singh. “Rao Abhey Singh Smiriti Manch; a social organisation, has taken the initiative to install the statue. The statue was to be installed on May 27, the first death anniversary of Rao Abhey Singh. Also, according to the manch, Babu Parmanandji had agreed in principle to unveil the statue. There appears to be some substance on the issue as The Tribune has a copy of correspondence from the office of the Governor to the the Deputy
Commissioner, Rewari. It (dated April 29) tells the Deputy Commissioner that the Governor is in receipt of an invitation from Capt Ajay Singh (the invitation letter has been enclosed). The Deputy Commissioner’s comment on whether it would be befitting for the Governor to attend the function or not, had been sought vide the correspondence. The manch today complained to the President, Dr A.P.J. Kalam, that some officials of the district led by the SDM and the DSP along with a contingent of nearly 200 police personnel arrived at the chowk at around 1.30 a.m. and started demolishing the structure. The structure was part of process to beautify the chowk and to install the statue. The letter sought Dr Kalam’s intervention and alleged that the state government was humiliating and indulging in vendetta against its opponents. The government’s “dictatorial” attitude was denying the fundamental rights of the people of the state and also breaching their human
rights. A copy of the letter has been sent to the Prime Minister, the National Human Rights Commission, the Union Home
Minister, the Governor of Haryana and the President of the AICC. Narrating the sequence of events, the manch alleged that when followers of Rao Abhey Singh tried to stop the authorities from demolishing the structure they were lathicharged. The official gunman of Capt Ajay Singh was also injured. The police, however, rebuts the charge. The manch claims that on its request the Rewari Municipal Council had adopted “unanimous” resolutions on separate dates favouring the christening of a road after Rao Abhey Singh and to allow it to beautify the chowk for “installing the statue”. The Chairman of the council said the resolution regarding the chowk was not for installation of the statue. Also the resolution had not become operative as it was yet to be ratified by the Deputy Commissioner. The manch has joined the issue with the authorities on this version saying that its original request was to install the statue. Capt Ajay Singh alleged that the Chief Minister was piqued over the possibility of the Governor unveiling the statue. Also he was the target of the INLD as he was the government’s vocal critic both in the Assembly and outside. Meanwhile, the Congress President in
Haryana, Mr Bhajan Lal, has condemned the government. |

Bamboo traders face uncertain future
Ambala, May 12 Bamboo traders have been asked to shift out of the area and they have been served notice in this connection. This has put a question mark on the future of the market which was established before Partition in Ambala. According to an official, the Bans Bazar has become a cause of concern to local residents since in the recent past, two major fires have broken out in the area. “Due to summers, residents are apprehensive that any major fire could engulf areas,” he said. He said the bamboo traders were issued “bhatthi” licence which was valid till March 31. “In any case, there are only a handful of bamboo traders in Bans Bazar and it would not be difficult to shift them to an area which is safer,” he opined. Mr Puneet Kumar, a bamboo trader, stated that they had received notice under the Pollution Act and inconvenience to the people. “We are ready to move out but the municipal committee should earmark an area for us within the municipal limits. There should also be basic facilities like water, electricity and phone lines,” he said. This is not for the first time that an attempt is being made to shift them out of the area. A major fire had broken out in the bazar in 1986 and an order was issued to immediately shift them out of the bazar. The traders then had sought time for shifting out of city. Thereafter, a piece of land was identified near the Devi Nagar barrier. It was proposed that the bamboo traders would shift to that area. A local resident stated that the move for shifting out the bamboo traders could not see the light of day since a controversy arose over the ownership of the land. He pointed out that the bamboo market is proving to be a major problem. “A number of times, the traffic on the road gets affected as the goods of the traders have to be downloaded,” he said. “Our greatest concern is that even a small spark could start off a major fire and we too could get affected by it as bamboo can become highly inflammable”, he said. The traders on their part said the bamboo business was already facing downslide. “For the past few years, we are feeling the pinch. While earlier, we used to sell a large number of “charpai”, the figure has come down significantly. Also people now prefer to buy iron goods,” he said.
