Fatehabad, May 2
Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today said that the Fatehabad by-election would prove decisive in state politics. Addressing a gathering here on the occasion of the filing of nomination papers by INLD candidate Swatantra Chowdhary, Mr Chautala said the byelection result would be a verdict of the people on the performance of his government.

The Chief Minister said he had tried to better the lot of all sections of society. He said when he took over as Chief Minister, the condition of the state was bad and the state coffer was empty.

The Chief Minister took a dig at state Congress President Bhajan Lal and said it was only after his repeated attempts that the former Chief Minister had been forced to field Mr Dura Ram. He said Mr Bhajan Lal had been challenging him on the floor of the House to contest an election against him to test his popularity.

Meanwhile, Mr Bhajan Lal started his seven-day tour of the villages in the constituency from his native village, Mohamadpur Rohi, this morning. He sought support to his candidate in the villages dominated by the ‘Bishnoi’ community. He was accorded a good reception at his native village.

Mr Bhajan Lal claimed that the defection of HPCC Secretary Ram Raj Mehta would not affect the prospects of the party candidate. He said Mr Mehta had lost his public following.

Twenty-three candidates have filed their papers for the May 21 byelection to the Fatehabad Assembly constituency.

Ms Swatantar Chaudhary (INLD) and Mr Baljeet Singh (SAD-A) were among the 14 candidates who filed their papers on the last day far filing nominations today. Scrutiny would take place tomorrow while withdrawals would take place on May 5.

The byelection would take place to fill the vacancy caused due to the recent death of INLD MLA Lila Kishan.
