Pak crash to 7-wicket defeat

Dambulla, May 11
New Zealand skittled Pakistan’s shaky batting line-up to easily win their first outing in the Sri Lankan triseries by seven wickets here today.

Pakistan’s batsmen fell like nine pins against an incisive attack as they were bundled out for 116 in 43.1 overs with four top order batsmen perishing for ducks.

New Zealand then coasted to 117 for three in 27.3 overs after openers Chris Nevin (28) and Stephen Fleming (21) survived a fiery opening spell from pace spearhead Shoaib Akhtar.

Lou Vincent, who was given his ticket to the one-day series just four days ago, scored an unbeaten 25, while Chris Cairns contributed 18 not out.

Pakistan, who defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 79 runs yesterday in the series opener, failed to cope with the Kiwi pace attack on a lively pitch and was dismissed for its lowest score in 65 one-dayers against New Zealand. Its previous lowest total against the Black Caps was 135 at Napier in 2001.

Paceman Shane Bond (two for seven) and man of the match Daryl Tuffey (two for 28) picked up four quick wickets after Kiwi skipper Fleming asked Pakistan in to bat first on winning the toss.

Pakistan slumped to 17 for five in the 12th over and faced the grim prospect of being skittled under its lowest one-day score of 43 against the West Indies 10 years ago. But some rearguard strokeplay by skipper Rashid Latif and Akhtar saved it the blushes. Pakistan’s vice captain Yousuf Youhana, among those who scored zero, condemned the wicket that gave batsmen no chance to play strokes.

"It wasn’t an easy wicket to bat on. Initially it had a lot of moisture, but their pace bowlers did very well," Youhana said. "We hope to put up a better performance in the remaining matches."

Fleming said his New Zealand team benefited from bowling on a damp surface, but it did not make for exciting one-day cricket. "We’ve got used to such pitches, having played on them at home most of last summer," Fleming said. "But it still wasn’t an ideal one-day track."

A shocking start saw Pakistan lose Mohammad Hafeez, Faisal Iqbal, Youhana, Abdur Razzaq - all out without scoring a run - and then Younis Khan (3) to leave them reeling at 17 for five.

Opener Hafeez, whose fighting half-century fetched him the ‘man of the match’ award yesterday, started the procession to the pavilion.

Hayden, Langer hit tons as Australia take control

St Johns, May 11
Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer shared in their fifth double-century opening partnership to give Australia a strong grip on the fourth and final cricket Test against the West Indies early on the third day here today.

The left-handed pair put on their highest stand of 242 before Langer was out for 111 as Australia encountered few problems against a lame West Indian bowling attack.

At lunch, Hayden was unconquered on 145 — his 14th Test century — and Australia were 285 for three in their second innings for a lead of 285 runs with eight sessions of play remaining.

The Australians added 114 runs off 28 overs in the morning session against an undermanned West Indian bowling attack, minus first innings destroyer Jermaine Lawson, who was off the field with reported back trouble.

Hayden and Langer provided Australia with a solid platform with their fifth double-century stand and bettering their previous best of 224 against New Zealand in Brisbane in November 2001.

Hayden and Langer, who came together at The Oval in London in August 2001, passed the Australian record of four 200-plus opening stands, previously held by Bob Simpson and Bill Lawry.

Langer's 161-ball knock came to an end when he was caught by Brian Lara off spinner Chris Gayle 45 minutes before lunch. The little left-hander hit 17 boundaries and a six for his 15th Test hundred and third against the West Indies.

Steve Waugh promoted big-hitting Adam Gilchrist to number three in the batting order raising the possibility of a declaration late in the day, but the move failed when he was out for six.

He edged off-spinner Omari Banks off the shoulder of wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs into the hands of substitute fielder Marlon Samuels at second slip.

Martin Love did not look comfortable during his 15 minute stay and was out on the last ball before lunch for two, well caught at leg-slip by Samuels off Banks.

The highest successful run chase in an Antiguan Test was the West Indies’ 216 for nine against Pakistan three years ago.

Bowlers had dominated the match up to the second innings with 20 wickets tumbling for 480 runs off 137.4 overs, but Langer and Hayden changed all that with their free-scoring partnership to set a solid platform for an unreachable second innings score.

Hussain still the ‘best’

London, May 11
Triggering a fresh war of words with his predecessors, Nasser Hussain has said he will not be quitting as England’s Test captain as he is still the best man to lead the country.

“It is best for me to carry on until there is someone who can do a better job than me,” Hussain said in an interview published in the Sunday Mirror today.

The angry skipper hit back at former stars — Ian Botham and Mike Gatting — who labelled him selfish for denying Michael Vaughan command of both sides.

Vaughan stepped into Hussain’s one-day skipper’s shoes last week - and is being tipped to fill the five-day post once Hussain departs the scene.

But Hussain, who endured a nightmare winter in the Ashes and the World Cup, is not too perturbed by this talk.

Hussain, 35, who is firmly behind the decision to give Vaughan the one-day job, said: “The easy option for me right now is to say to someone like Michael Vaughan or Marcus Trescothick, ‘Right, one of you can take over. You can do it all, I’ve had enough.”

“But I am not taking the selfish route. I am prepared to put my neck on the line this summer. If we lose to Zimbabwe it will be me who the fingers are pointed at.

“I still believe that on the first day of the first Test with Zimbabwe the side will be a better team because I am leading them out. If that’s being big-headed or arrogant or whatever, then so be it.” “I am not being selfish. I have told the selectors that if at any stage they decide Michael Vaughan or anyone else would do a better job or that I am not doing a particularly good job, I will happily stand aside,” Hussain said.

“But it is a huge gamble to say to someone like Michael, who is batting the way he is. ‘Go on son, you do everything. You go and do what Nasser has been doing for the last three or four years.’ No, it is best for me to carry on until there is someone who can do a better job than me.

Hussain also did not think he was being “self-centered” in making known his intention that he wanted to play 100 Tests.

“My ambition is still to play 100 Test matches. If I don’t do it, fine. If I don’t play well this summer someone else will come in. I’d rather be like this, trying to fulfil my ambitions, than be someone who just plods along for the next 18 months with no goals in mind." “I don’t want to look back when I retire and think I finished my career a bit feebly.

“If Michael takes over in the future I would be happy to carry on playing Test cricket under him - but only if I am scoring runs and deserve my place.

“Right now I think the two-captaincy thing will work as well for England as it does for Australia. I have known Michael a long time. He is a close friend and I hope he is a very successful one-day skipper. He has a good character.” PTI

Hockey team gears up to restore glory

Bangalore, May 11
Indian team is gearing up to restore the country’s past glory in hockey at the Athens Olympics next year.

“Preparations are in full swing to build the team for the Olympics and all international tournaments will be utilised as an opportunity to strengthen the team,” national coach Rajender Singh told UNI in an interview here.

He said the first hurdle would be the Pre-Olympic tournament to be held in Spain in March. Twelve teams, including India would be vying for the top slot in the event and he was confident that India would qualify for Olympics overcoming the tough competition.

“The boys are completely fit, physically and mentally, and can face any team in the international arena,’’ the former Olympian said adding that the boys would get a good exposure at the forthcoming twin tour of Australia.

He said except for Deepak Thakur, who suffered knee injury during the Mumbai Gold Cup tournament, all the 31 probables attending a national camp at the Sports Authority of India South Centre here, were in fine form.

The tournament in Perth and Sydney would give an opportunity to learn about individual shortcomings and corrective steps would be taken to overcome them, he added.

Mr Singh said competing teams Australia, Australia ‘A’, Pakistan like India, would also concentrate on improving their performance as for them too, it would be a crucial tournament to improve their performance and gear up for the next Olympics.

He said adequate training had been given to the players during the camp as per the new rules which prevented players from stopping the ball outside the circle. The rules also did not permit checking the ball above the shoulder and when defending, not more than eight players could enter the circle, he added.

The four-nation tournament would be held under the new rules.

To a question, he said “we are not poor in converting penalty corners. In the Champions trophy, the conversion rate was 50 per cent,” he said adding that the defence had also improved tremendously. Efforts were made during the camp to overcome the shortcomings the team faced during the Asian Tournament and Champions Trophy.

Stating that “almost the same team, which played in the Asian Cup, may go to Australia,’’ Mr Singh said there could be some changes due to injury.

To another question about inclusion of youngsters, Mr Singh said “it is not the question of young or old, what is needed is physical fitness and commitment to the game and nation.” UNI

Justine wins German Open

Berlin, May 11
Justine Henin-Hardenne fought off three match points and became the first player in nine years to defend the title at the German Open today, taking a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory over Kim Clijsters.

Henin-Hardenne and her fellow Belgian struggled for two hours, 15 minutes before Clijsters hit a forehand long, losing the last game at love after she wasted the three match points while leading 5-4.

Henin-Hardenne, the world No 4, swept to her third title this year. It was also the ninth of her career at the clay court event, a major tune-up for the French Open.

Clijsters played with a bandaged left thigh, suffering a hamstring strain, after the first set, although it did not seem to affect her play.

The Belgian world No 2 has shown problems converting match points in the past. In the semifinal yesterday, she needed four to beat Jennifer Capriati and at the Australian Open she held two before losing against world No 1 Serena Williams.

"I think, may be, I have a problem with that," Clijsters said.

Henin-Hardenne, seeded second behind Clijsters, became the first since Steffi Graf to win back to back titles and snapped a three-match losing streak to her countryman in a seesaw match that had 6,000 spectators applauding and whistling at shots.

She had beaten Clijsters the last time they faced each other on clay, and held a 2-1 edge on the surface. The Belgian appeared to have the match under control when she led 6-4, 4-1.

Then Clijsters rattled off 16 straight points and forced a third set in which both held serve and scored winners all across the court, drawing steady applause from 6,000 spectators.

Clijsters, who will replace Venus at No 2 rankings, came into the match with a dominating record this year, the 19-year-old's best on the tour.

She was 31-1 this year, without including three losses to the Williams sisters. The Belgian player has now played seven tournaments, won two, reached five finals and two semifinals.

Henin-Hardenne, who has worked out and is more muscular, is also enjoying a top year. One of her titles was at Charleston, where she ended Serena Williams' 21-match winning streak in the final. AP

Serena plans Roman conquest

Rome, May 11
World number one and defending champion Serena Williams defends her WTA Rome Masters Series title at the Foro Italico clay court event which starts here tomorrow.

Williams, preparing to defend her French Open later this month, defeated Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in last year’s Italian final 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.

Former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade, who triumphed at the All-England Club in 1977, believes Serena is set to outshine her once dominant sister Venus and stay at the top of women’s tennis for a long time to come.

“As long as Serena stays fit she will be hard to beat for years, but I don’t think Venus will survive long as she is losing heart,” Wade told the Evening Standard.

“Then again, when Martina Hingis was dominating so few years ago I thought that would go on forever.

“She was such a brilliant player with so many talents — strong mentally, great at getting herself out of problems — and of all the players she was the smartest and most interested in other things outside tennis. She didn’t look down her nose at you.

“But then her game went down and became defensive. She wanted to ride horses and party, rather than put her nose to the grindstone and be single-minded.”

“Then she embarrassed herself so badly with her behaviour in defeat at the French Open final against Steffi Graf in 1999, and I thought from then on she never knew how to find a safe outlet for her frustration and anger. That’s what I really think forced her out of the game,” Wade said.

Venus, who recently jumped back into second place in the WTA rankings, is absent after pulling a stomach muscle before the German Open earlier this month.

The former world number one has played only four events this year and not won a WTA event in more than eight months. AFP

NFL title to stay with East Bengal

Panaji, May 11
All-India Football Federation (AIFF) president, P R Das Munshi has stated that there was no question of awarding the NFL title to Vasco Sports Club following the controversy of an East Bengal player.

“AIFF has not received any complaint .....there is no question of giving East Bengal the title,” Mr Das Munshi told reporters after the AIFF executive meeting at Varca yesterday.

He was answering a question about Vasco FC’s contention that they be declared as NFL champions following the controversy regarding East Bengal’s Douglas D’Silva overstaying without a proper visa and playing the crucial match against Vasco in which he scored two goals and gave East Bengal 4-0 win and the coveted title.

Stating that the AIFF had not received a complaint to that effect, Mr Das Munshi said “it is not the job of AIFF to investigate or check immigration or visa procedures”.

“We handle only extension requests. No one has approached me so far and if at all there has been any violation, then the prevailing laws of the land will take care of it,” he added.

“Nobody has lodged a protest over the issue before the National Football League ended and raking up the issue now makes no sense. Moreover, even the prize distribution ceremony has already taken place since there was no protest,” he said.

Meanwhile, the one-man committee of Goa Football Association (GFA), headed by Jovito Lopes, has submitted its report to the AIFF on the registering of three players on loan by Haywards Sporting Club, Goa following an allegation by Fransa Football Club. PTI

On the tie against India’s arch rival Pakistan in the tournament, he said: “We have an upper hand though India and Pakistan are playing the game 100 per cent. But it depends on who plays well during the 70 minutes.” UNI
