Akhtar powers Pak to 79-run victory

Dambulla, May 10
Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar silenced his critics with a vital two-wicket show to help Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 79 runs in the opening match of the triangular one-day series here today.

Pakistan managed to defend their modest total of 199-8 as they bundled Sri Lanka out for 120, thanks to Akhtar who was under pressure to deliver.

Akhtar (2-19), warned by his country’s cricket chief Tauqir Zia that this tournament would be the last chance to revive his career, responded with a fiery performance to set up his team’s victory.

Sri Lanka could never recover from Akhtar’s early blows and lost their last seven wickets for a paltry 22 runs in a dramatic collapse.

Pakistani skipper Rashid Latif used his main weapon in three short spells and the paceman struck when it mattered most, removing hard-hitting Sanath Jayasuriya in his first over and then a well-set Kumar Sangakkara (29).

Jayasuriya erred in driving and edged a rising ball to second slip where Younis Khan perfectly timed his jump to hold a head-high catch.

Akhtar did more than just taking two wickets as he rattled Sri Lanka in his eight probing overs. He beat skipper Marvan Atapattu (26) and Sangakkara in his opening spell, but was unlucky to find an edge.

Sangakkara, let off on two and 17, failed to cash in on his chances and was caught at point by Shoiab Malik while trying to cut Akhtar.

Seamers Mohammad Sami (2-19) and Abdur Razzaq (1-22), and off-spinner Malik (2-23) also kept pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen to drive home the advantage given by Akhtar.

Razzaq trapped Atapattu lbw for 26 and Sami accounted for Mahela Jayawardene (22) in a similar fashion to virtually shatter Sri Lanka’s hopes of winning the low-scoring match.

It was all over for Sri Lanka when last specialist batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana was caught by Younis Khan off Malik for no score.

Kaluwitharana had earlier become the seventh wicketkeeper in the world to complete 200 dismissals in one-dayers when he stumped Latif off Muttiah Muralitharan.

Jermaine Lawson wrecks Australia with seven-wicket haul

St Johns, May 10
Rival captains Brian Lara and Steve Waugh exchanged heated words as tension bubbled over in an engrossing battle of wills on the second morning of the fourth and final cricket Test at the Recreation Ground here today.

Lara again stood defiant in another brilliant innings to have the West Indies 100 runs behind Australia’s first innings total of 240.

Lara was unconquered on 40 at lunch with Ridley Jacobs yet to score and the West Indies 140 for six after losing four wickets in the opening session for 93 runs off 25 overs.

But there was a curt exchange between Lara and Waugh just before first-hour drinks when the Australians voiciferously appealed what they thought was a catch behind off Jason Gillespie’s bowling.

Lara, on 15 at the time, played at Gillespie and there was a distinct sound as the ball passed the bat, but no deviation on its path to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

English umpire David Shepherd turned down the raucous appeal and Lara was unmoved triggering some verballing from the Australian players behind the bat.

Lara went up to Waugh and they had a brief exchange with the West Indian skipper highly agitated before an intervention by Shepherd to soothe the situation.

Lara became only the third West Indian to score 8,000 Test runs along with Viv Richards and Gary Sobers as he again defied the four-prong Australian fast bowling attack. He cut Brett Lee for six off the first ball he faced.

The West Indies, who began the day at 47 for two, lost the wickets of Devon Smith (37), nightwatchman Vasbert Drakes (21), Ramnaresh Sarwan (24) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1) in the morning session.

Lee, who put down a clear caught and bowled chance when Smith was on 26, had him caught behind by Gilchrist and then removed the dogged Drakes leg before wicket to a yorker.

Sarwan played on the rise and returned a catch to Andy Bichel and five minutes before lunch first Test centurion Chanderpaul was bowled between bat and pad by Glenn McGrath, who was angling in from around the wicket.

Yesterday, West Indian Jermaine Lawson produced the best bowling performance in Antigua with seven wickets to reduce Australia to their lowest score of the series in an electrifying opening day.

The 21-year-old Jamaican tearaway had the Australians ducking and diving as he claimed 7 for 78 off 19.1 hostile overs to bundle Steve Waugh’s champion team out for 240, by far their lowest total of the four-match series.

At the close yesterday, the West Indies were 47 for two off 15 overs with Devon Smith on 21 and nightwatchman Vasbert Drakes not out 12.

Lawson, who captured a split hat-trick in the previous Bridgetown Test, took his series wicket tally to 14 with two aggressive spells which had the brow-beaten home supporters on their feet. AFP

Morale-boosting victory for Montgomery

Osaka, Japan, May 10
World record holder Tim Montgomery edged out Australian Patrick Johnson to win a hotly contested 100 metres in 10.04 at the Japan Grand Prix in Osaka today.
Running his second race since setting a new world mark of 9.78 last September, Montgomery almost turned his ankle over after 75 metres but hung on, dipping first at the tape to snatch a morale-boosting victory by just 0.01 seconds.

"I went to hit it like I always do but I went over on my left ankle and had to catch myself from falling on him," said the 28-year-old American, who was matched stride for stride by the powerful Johnson.

"That messed up a nine-second race. But it was a big race for me to establish confidence. I knew he was sharp but I’m still trying to find my rhythm."

Johnson set an Australian record of 9.93, the fastest time in the world this year, in Mito, Japan on Monday and put a positive spin on his narrow defeat in Osaka.

"The best in the world beat me by one hundredth. I lost it on the dip. But the 9.93 is still the tip of the iceberg for me," said the 30-year-old, who did not start running competitively until 1996.

For Montgomery, beaten into second place by Canadian Nicholas Macrozonaris in Mexico City last weekend, victory gave him a welcome boost before the start of the European season and the world championships in Paris this August.

"My goal this year is the world championships. This was my second race and I managed to pull it out, which is nice to know," said Montgomery.

Japanese 200 metres specialist Shingo Suetsugu finished third behind Montgomery and Johnson in 10.16 with American Bernard Williams fourth in 10.17.

Meanwhile, world indoor champion Tyree Washington won the 400 metres in 44.97 with fellow American Calvin Harrison second in 45.32. Australian Clinton Hill took third in 45.39.

Dudley Dorival of Haiti won the 110 metres hurdles in 13.49 ahead of Jamaican Maurice Wignall (13.50) and American Duane Ross (13.51) at the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, venue for the 2007 world championships.

American Mark Crear, who won at the season-opening grand prix in Brazil last weekend, clocked 13.58 to finish fourth after getting off to a poor start from lane four. Reuters

Ferrero, Federer to clash in semis

Rome, May 10
Spanish number two seed Juan Carlos Ferrero secured a place in the semi-finals of the clay court Rome Masters here yesterday after beating Australian Open runner-up Rainer Schuttler of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

Tipped by many to win the French Open later this month, Ferrero will now meet Roger Federer in the semifinal at the Foro Italico.

The 23-year-old Ferrero said he was expecting his toughest match so far against the Swiss number four seed, who won his third ATP title of the season last week in Munich.

"Roger is playing so well at the moment and is confident after his victory in Munich," Ferrero said. "He’s in form but I’ll try to be aggressive and defend his big serves."

Federer had a much harder time of it against Filippo Volandri before eventually shaking off the 21-year-old Italian number one 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Volandri played way above his ranking of 100 and enjoyed plenty of support from a partisan home crowd, but a string of unforced errors in the final set undid all his good work and allowed Federer to advance.

Federer was disappointed at blotting his copybook by losing his first set of the week.

"I shouldn’t have lost that set. I think I could have won the match in two sets," said the 22-year-old who admitted to feeling a little tired.

"I threw away many good opportunities to end the match early. I don’t know why."

Unseeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov clinched a last four place after ousting giant Dutchman Martin Verkerk 6-3, 7-5.

Forced to retire from last week’s Munich semifinal against Jarkko Nieminen because of a neck injury, Kafelnikov now faces Spaniard Felix Mantilla in the other semifinal. AFP
