Tension in village ahead of panchayat poll

Accused in NDPS Act case acquitted
Ludhiana, May 9
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr G.R. Banyal, has acquitted Avtar Singh ‘Tari’ of Gobindpura, Civil Lines, an accused in NDPS Act case, as the prosecution failed to examine the investigating officer and a DSP, in whose presence the narcotic was allegedly seized. The non-examination of these material witnesses resulted in the acquittal of the accused.

Gang of dacoits busted, three arrested
Ludhiana, May 9
The police has busted a gang of dacoits which had been operating in this district. The gang, reported to have been headed by a suspended police constable, includes several wrestlers from Alamgir Akhara, near here.

Nehru Kendra scholarships awarded

Seema Rani, a B.Com. student, received a special award at a function organised by the Nehru Sidhant Kendra Trust to Commemorate Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on his 39th death anniversary where today. Seema, a student of Guru Nanak College, Doraha, supports her family by distributing newspapers in the morning. She also runs a shop. Hardeep Kaur of Ramgarhia Girls College was also given a scholarship.

Programme for scouts ends

NSS camp at college
Ludhiana, May 9
A 10-day NSS camp which started on May 7 at Devki Devi Jain Memorial College will conclude on May 16. College students and volunteers are attending the camp. Prof Antar Jyoti Ghai and Prof Lotika Gupta are the NSS programme officers.

Primary teachers postpone dharna

Principal withdraws bail plea
Ludhiana, May 9
Principal of DAV School R.S.Patyal today withdrew his anticipatory bail application. On the last date, the judge had directed the Additional Public Prosecutor to produce the relevant record. Though no record was produced, the Principal preferred to withdraw the pending anticipatory bail application.

Punjab Govt asked to promote Punjabi
Ludhiana, May 9
At a meeting of the Punjabi Sahitya Akademi, Surjit Pattar, president of the Academi, chalked out certain special programmes to celebrate golden jubilee of the akademi. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Surjit Pattar said, “The akademi proposes to hold philosophical and literary seminars at the international level to celebrate 400 years of the first reading of Guru Granth Sahib that took place in April, 1604.

Cardiac surgery at any age
Ludhiana, May 9
There is a good news for heart patients. At least the age should no longer be a deterring factor for people intending to go in for cardiac surgery. Recently, Dr C.K. Mukherjee, cardiac surgeon, who returned from the USA and is working in Sigma Heart Institute, performed several operations on the patients of various ages from six months to 87 years.

LDBA to honour cagers

The Ludhiana District Basketball Association (LDBA) will organise a function here at Guru Nanak Sports Complex tomorrow to felicitate the Ludhiana boys team which won the 54th Punjab State Junior Basketball Championship held at Amritsar from May 2 to 5.
