‘Mystery’ delaying indoor stadium project

In a rather unprecedented manner, the Finance and Contracts Committee of the Municipal Corporation has set a process in motion through which four year old tenders for the proposed Rs 15 crore indoor stadium project in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar locality on the Pakhowal road were sought to be revived to pave way for allotment of work to the lowest bid.

Plot’s auction to be probed
Ludhiana, March 27
Taking cognizance of a complaint against the auctioning of a commercial plot in the Rajguru Nagar area, which was allotted to a politically influential person of the city, allegedly at a throwaway price, the state government has directed the local Improvement Trust to conduct a high-level probe into the case.

Petrol pump site nets 48.8 lakh
Ludhiana, march 27
The Municipal Corporation today sold a petrol pump site in the Sukhdev Market in the prime locality of Civil Lines for Rs 48.80 lakh through open public auction at its zonal office in Sarabha Nagar here. The site, carved out of a 600 square yards of land, with partly built up pillars and basement, behind Kailash Cinema, went under hammer at Rs 12,200 per square yard against the reserve price of Rs 8,000.

BJP leader asks Mufti to quit
Ludhiana, March 27
Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Sat Pal Gosain, while condemning the massacre of 24 Kashmiri Pandits in the valley by militants, has asked the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, to quit office on moral grounds.

The Congress would hold a ‘Desh bachao’ rally in the Capital on March 30 to focus on the overall round failure of the BJP-led NDA government in the Centre. The rally, to be addressed by the All-India Congress Committee President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, and other senior leaders of the party, would also highlight the party policies in the context of the welfare of farmers and farm workers, scheduled castes, backward classes and economically weaker sections and problems like ever-increasing unemployment.

Trader shot, 3.5 lakh looted
Mandi Gobindgarh, March 27
Two scooter-borne miscreants took away Rs 3.5 lakh from Dwarka Dass after shooting him last night. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Traders form panel on VAT
Ludhiana, March 27
In an open defiance of the government decision to charge central excise from April 1 onwards and also the value added tax (which has been deferred for the time being), over 150 trade and industrial organisations today decided not to get the registration numbers from the concerned departments, which would consequentially mean that they will not be paying the duty.

Plays mark World Theatre Day
Ludhiana, March 27
The local Rang Manch Sansthan, in collaboration with the Kendriya Punjabi Rangmanch Sabha and Punjabi Sahitya Akademi, is celebrating World Theatre Day. A two-day seminar and festival of plays was opened in this connection yesterday.

The Adeeb International (Sahir Cultural Academy) in association with the Nehru Sidhant Kender Trust is organising 31st annual Jashn-e-Sahir-2003 on Saturday, March 29, in the Panday Auditorium, Feroze Gandhi Market, Ludhiana. Besides, presentation of annual Sahir and Adeeb International Awards to eminent personalities an All-India Mushaira will also be held on this occasion in which a galaxy of Urdu poets from all over India and abroad will be participating.

2 dengue cases in city
Ludhiana, March 27
Dengue has surfaced in Ludhiana again as two cases have been reported at S. Avtar Singh Grewal Memorial Hospital. According to Dr Gurinder Singh Grewal, Medical Superintendent of the SAS Grewal Memorial Hospital, one of the patients is male. Both are residents of Ludhiana.

Lakhvinder, Balwinder fastest
Ludhiana, March 27
Lakhvinder Singh and Balwinder Kaur emerged as the fastest runners among boys and girls, respectively, at the 43rd Annual Athletics meet of Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic here today. They came out triumphant in the 100 m sprint.
