Farmers’ rally chokes city heart

Chaos prevailed on the roads leading to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) for more than three hours as different sections of the Madhya Marg and Purav Marg were blocked in the wake of a rally held by six farmer unions here today. The farmers have been agitating at Matka Chowk since March 10 in support of their demands.

The MOH, Public Health and Road wings of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation have served notices to 12 hotels of Sector-35C on charges of leakage of water from their water tanks leading to water logging, creating unhygienic environment and damaging the back-lane.

Red alert sounded in region

In the wake of seizure of bombs at the Delhi railway station, a red alert has been sounded in the region. The Chandigarh Police has also been asked to go on a high alert and keep an eye on suspicious looking objects at public places.

Discos may serve liquor from April 1

The Chandigarh Administration will soon allow serving of liquor in various discotheques in the city. City youngsters have been demanding for long that liquor be allowed in the discos. It is likely to be allowed from April 1 when the new excise policy comes into place.

Privatisation of sanitation okayed

The Finance and Contracts Committee (F&CC) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has cleared the proposal of the privatisation of sanitation in 20 sectors, including colonies and four villages, through a single contract, ensuring employment to at least 700 local residents.

Two murder suspects acquitted

Two city residents Narinder Singh and Mukesh suspects in a murder case were today acquitted by a local court. The two were acquitted by the UT Additional and Sessions Judge, Mr J.S.Klar as the prosecution failed to prove the charges levelled against them.

The seven-year old Beant Singh assassination trial case being conducted at the Model Burail Jail was today transferred to new Judge by the UT District and Sessions Judge, Mr H.S Bhalla, following the Punjab and Haryana High Court directions. Mr Bhalla had been hearing the case for three years.
