Close on the heels of busting a certificate scandal, the district administration today claimed to have unearthed another scandal in which a local industrialist allegedly duped the state government of more than Rs 1 crore.

With more skeletons emerging from the closet of Punjab Police Inspector Shamsher Singh Guddu booked by the State Vigilance Bureau under corruption charges earlier this week, the Vigilance Bureau has found that the cop was facing charges in as many as nine cases of land grab, illegal detention, misuse of authority and lodging false complaints.

Bid to kidnap child foiled
Ludhiana, December 21
A bid to kidnap a class III student from a school in Sherpur was foiled yesterday due to the alertness of two citizens who happened to witness the kidnapper’s sweet talk to lure the child.

Four burglaries in 24 hours
Ludhiana, December 21
Three shops and a house were found burgled in the city during the past 24 hours. Two of the shops burgled at New Shakti Nagar in Basti Jodhewal while one is at Moti Nagar Main Bazar in Focal Point. A burglary also took place at Durga Puri in the Division No. 6 area.

Industrial policy to give priority to border districts

Panel rejects PSEB appeal

The Punjab Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has rejected the appeal of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) against an order of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum quashing the demand of Rs 42166 from a city resident, Mr Parshottam Kumar, on the charge of theft of electricity.

AFDR backs minister on regulation

The Association For Democratic Rights (AFDR) has come to the defence of the Health Minister over the recent decision to impose a regulation on private hospitals regarding the fee structure and unethical practices. Taking a serious note of the statement by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the AFDR said by opposing such a regulation, the IMA was ignoring a right of the common man.

On the second day of the three-day sports festival of the local Malwa Sports Association, the main attractions were the bullock-cart races, kabaddi matches, dog races, weightlifting and races of men and women.

Holding of circus cancelled by admn
Khanna, December 21
The inaugural show of Jambo Circus which was to be staged here last evening was cancelled when the local SDM, Mr Manvesh Singh Sidhu, did not grant permission for the holding of the circus. The SDM said that the circus authorities had failed to show the permission of the Animal Welfare Board of India, which is necessary to run a circus.
