Our Correspondent

Rewari, December 10
The first Haryana state-level conference and workshop on “Basics in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology” was held under the joint auspices of the Rewari Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (ROGS) and the Federation of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) here on Sunday. Besides towering personalities like Dr P. K. Shah, Chairperson, GOGSI Imaging Science Committee (Mumbai), Dr Kuldeep Singh, MBBS, FIMCH, FAUI (Delhi), Dr Varun Duggal, MBBS, MD (Radio Diagnosis) (Delhi), Prof Krishna Sangwan and Prof Maya Sood, at least 200 delegates from Rohtak, Hisar, Bhiwani, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rewari, Narnaul, Delhi, Jaipur, Alwar and various other places participated in it.

Besides an impressive inaugural session, the conference comprised three scientific sessions along with a potentially didactic workshop.

The first scientific session commenced with the keynote address of Dr Shah, who comprehensively dealt with an overview of obstetric ultrasound. The display of numerous visual slides of the ultrasound of a foetus in various stages of the gestation period made the lecture easy to grasp as well as interesting. Simultaneously, the abnormalities and complications during pregnancy with their sonographic pictures were also explained.

Dr Kuldeep Singh concentrated on the use of ultrasound in the detection of congenital anomalies in his superbly informative talk. The delegates were given to understand the techniques of scanning a foetus from head to toe and serially examining each foetus to detect any anomaly of brain, eyes, face, spine, heart, lungs, stomach, kidney, liver, intestines and limbs. Besides, the ultrasound pictures and different foetal abnormalities were also displayed for the participants to understand and diagnose these conditions.

Dr Varun Duggal dealt with the use of ultrasound in twin pregnancy (more than one foetus). He also dwelt on the ultrasound appearance of twins, the complications that could develop during such pregnancies as well as the ways and means to diagnose them by ultrasound.

In the second session, the use of ultrasound in gynaecology was discussed by Dr Shah. He gave detailed information on gynaecological conditions and the ultrasound pictures of various diseases like fibroid, ovarian tumours and pelvic infection. He also explained the use of USG in infertility and reproductive techniques.

Dr Duggal focussed on the use of USG to diagnose abnormal tumours of ovaries, tubes and uterus while Dr Kuldeep Singh discussed the use of colour Doppler in obstetrics in detail.

The third scientific session was devoted to the practical use of ultrasound. Host faculty Dr Mitra Saxena elaborated on the techniques pertaining to the integrated use of this diagnostic modality in examining patients for improving clinical acumen and delivering better patient care.

In the end a workshop was held in which Dr Shah and Dr Kuldeep Singh did USG on about 20 patients. It was a practical demonstration of the session.

Earlier, the conference was inaugurated by the Haryana Health Minister, Dr M. L. Ranga, who complimented the organisers and announced a grant of Rs 31,000 for the society.

Jeev falters on final day, gets Nationwide Tour card
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 10
Ace Indian Golfer Jeev Milkha Singh faltered on the final day of the US PGA Tour Qualifying School at La Quinta, California, when he returned a card of five-over 77 at the treacherous Stadium Course. He thus missed on the opportunity to create history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the lucrative US PGA Tour, but became the first Indian to gain a full exemption on the second-rung Nationwide Tour, which replaces the Buy.com Tour in the coming season.

According to information reaching here, the Hero Honda-sponsored Jeev was finally tied for the 73rd place at three-under 429 after six rounds. More than 4000 players started the Q-School and only 170 made it to the final stage in what is universally regarded as the toughest golf tournament in the world.

The top-35 and ties were to get their PGA Tour card, and 38 players got in at eight-under 424. The next 48 received full exemption on the Nationwide Tour, and those after that got some exemptions on the same tour.

Jeev dropped five strokes in last five holes, making double bogeys on the 15th and 18th holes and a bogey on the 14th. Starting the day at eight-under, all he needed was to play a par round. But he did not have a good start and made bogeys on the second and third holes. “Those bogies put a lot of pressure on me. Thereafter, I started trying too much. It was a make or break effort in the last few holes and I had to go for the maximum. I am extremely disappointed with the way I finished after playing so well in the first five days,” said the 30-year-old on phone from the US.

“In the final analysis, I think the fourth and fifth day were the turning point. I made so many birdies on those two days, but also made equal number of bogeys,” added Jeev.

Jeff Brehaut won the medallist honour, shooting a 1-over 73 on the final day. Brehaut, who finished at 16-under-par 416, finished one stroke ahead of James Mclean, Chris Anderson and Alex Cejka. McLean closed with a 70 while Anderson shot 72 and Cejka a 73.

HC moved for nod to use 80-litre CNG
cylinders by buses
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 10
The Federation of Delhi Bus Operators (FDBO) on Tuesday moved the Delhi High Court for a direction to the Union Government and State Transport Authority (STA) of Government of NCT of Delhi to grant them permission for using CNG cylinders of 80 litres’ capacity in their buses.

Justice Manmohan Sarin issued notices to the Union Government, the STA, Automative Research Association of India, Indian Institute of Petroleum and the Central Machinery Testing and Training Institute seeking their replies by December 19.

The FDBO in a writ petition sought the court’s direction to the Union Ministry of Surface Transport and the STA for allowing buses to have eight CNG cylinders of 80 litres’ capacity instead of six cylinders of 65 litres’ capacity.

FDBO counsel Nalin Tripathi said that a bus has to cover about 375 km a day and it runs short of fuel with the six 65-litre cylinders permitted by the STA. Though two thousand buses with 80 litres’ cylinders were plying on the roads they were not being provided with the registration certificate by the STA, he added.

Mr Tripathi said that the 65 litres’ cylinders were not available in the market and the operators had no option but to fit the buses with cylinders of 80-litre capacity on conversion of diesel buses to CNG mode.

The bus owners have spent about Rs 3.5 lakh in converting a diesel bus into CNG mode but the STA has yet to issue them the registration certificates, he said.
