Total Tennis Academy players shine

It was a day of Total Tennis Academy players at the Mount Carmel Total Tennis Tournament finals. All players who won titles in various age groups were from academy. Starting from the youngest age category of the championship boys u-10, it was the top seed all the way. The best player in the category Digvijay Singh of St Stephen School, top seed, struggled to beat Gurinder Singh of Kharar. In a very nail-bitting final Digvijay Singh prevailed over Gurinder Singh with one break in each set. The score read in favour of the top seed was 6-3, 6-4. In the boys u-14 finals Varun Chandra, a trainee of the academy and student of Vivek High School, defeated Yuvraj Bansal of St Kabir 6-1, 6-4. Varun Chandra played his second final against the top seed in the boys u-16 category, Karan Patnaik, also a trainee of the academy and student of Mount Carmel School. Varun Chandra had upset the second seed of the same category. Karan was ruthless in the Ist set as he blanked Varun but in the second set Varun gave tough time to the top seed and stretched him to the limits. The score in the favour of top seed was 6-0, 7-5. In the girls section, Inayat Khosla a trainee of the academy and student of Vivek High School, had reached in both finals. Lady luck smiled over Inayat Khosla in the girls u-12 final when she beat Ankita Singh of CLTA 6-1, 6-3. In the girls u-16 final was an all Total Tennis Academy affair. Both the trainees of academy fought for coveted titles. But the treatment given by Isha Toor was just the same as Inayat did with Ankita Singh. Inayat lost the final with the identical score by which she won the title i.e. 6-1, 6-3. The following are the results (all finals): Boys u-10: Digvijay Singh b Gurinder Singh 6-3, 6-4; Boys u-14: Varun Chandra b Yuvraj Bansal 6-1, 6-4; Boys u-16: Karan Patnaik b Varun Chandra 6-0, 7-5; Girls u-12:- Inayat Khosla b Ankita Singh 6-1, 6-3; Girl u-16: Isha Toor b Inayat Khosla 6-1, 6-3. Chandigarh TT championshipOn the opening day of the 15th Chandigarh State TT Championship being held at the TT hall, Sector 23, DAV Public School, Sector 8, won the subjunior girls team championship defeating the coaching centre team in a well-fought match fully extended to five sets at the score of 3-2. In the boys section Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, qualified for the final defeating Tender Heart -A, Sector 33. Earlier, in the semifinals, DAV Public School (Girls) team defeated Bhavan Hawk, Sector 27, easily 3-0 and in the second semifinals the coaching centre team also had no difficulty in defeating Manav Mangal 3-0. In the state championship about 200 players from various schools, colleges and other institutions are participating. Punjab yachtingThe Punjab Amateur Yachting Association (PAYA) is holding the first Punjab State Open Yachting Championship at Sukhna Lake, from November 16 to 17. Mr S.M. Sharma, president, PAYA, said the yachting competitions would be held for both men and women in enterprise class. Thirty entries had been received. The opening ceremony would be held on November 16 at 11.30 a.m. while the closing ceremony would be held on November 17 at 3 p.m. Leut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), Punjab Governor, would give away the prizes, he added. Carom tourney The second Saupin’s Inter-School Carrom Tournament, under the aegis of the Panchkula District Carrom Association is starting tomorrow at Saupin’s School, Sector 9, Panchkula. Players from seven schools of Panchkula district are taking part in two categories — up to Class VIII and Class IX and above. In the team championship 16 boys teams (up to Class VIII: eight teams; and Class IX onwards: eight teams) and eight girls teams (up to Class VIII: four teams; and Class IX onwards: four teams) are participating in the tournament. Baseball trialsThe Baseball Association of Chandigarh is conducting trials for boys and girls under the age group of 17 years for the Chandigarh baseball teams which would participate in the 14th Junior National Baseball Championship to be held at Goa from November 24 to 29. The trials will be conducted on November 16 at 3 p.m. at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Cricket tourney Eight teams will take part in an inter-college cricket Tournament for the Kapil Dev Trophy being organised by the UT Cricket Association at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, DAV College and Punbab Engineering College, Chandigarh, from November 16. The participating teams have been divided into two pools. Pool ‘A’ comprises DAV ‘A’ Government College -11, SD College-32 ‘B’ and Panjab University campus while Pool ‘B’ consists of SD College - 32 ‘A’, DAV ‘B’, Govt College-46 and Khalsa College-26. Each team in its pool will play a match each against the remaining teams of its pool during the league phase. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semifinals. The league matches and semifinals will be of 45 overs for each side while the final will be of 50 overs each. On the opening day DAV ‘B’ will take on Govt College - 46 at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. Inter-school TTAn inter-school table tennis tournament was held yesterday on the premises of the junior wing of DAV Senior Public School, Surajpur. In the girls section, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Panchkula, remained winner while DAV Senior Public School, Surajpur finished runners up. In the boys section, Maj R.N. Kapoor DAV School, Ambala Cantt, were winners while DAV Public School, Ambala City, finished runners-up. Karate championshipThe Amateur Karate Association, Chandigarh, is organising the first R.L. Kapoor Memorial Karate Championship on November 16 and 17 at the Skating Rink hall, Sector 10, Chandigarh. The tournament will be held under WKF rules and the competition will be conducted in subjunior and junior boys and girls categories. PATIALA Guard mounting competition The second battalion of the India Reserve Battalions lifted the running trophy of the guard mounting competition organised at the Commando Complex at Bahadurgarh, near here, on Thursday. Battalion Commandant Ramji Lal and team in charge ASI Balbir Singh received the running trophy from the Inspector-General of Police, IRB, Dr P.M. Das. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Das said the idea to have such a competition was conceived by him when he was DIG of Patiala range in 1998. He said the guard mounting competition besides instilling skill in the activity also instilled a sense of competition between various IRB battalions to acquire the running trophy. The IG said it had now been decided to organise the competition in all armed wings of the state.
