New Delhi, November 12
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shatrughan Sinha has called upon schoolchildren to act as health ambassadors for making family, society and country healthy.

He was delivering the inaugural speech at the three-day Bal Swasthya Mela, jointly organised by the Health and Family Welfare Departments of both the Centre and Delhi at Talkatora Grounds here today. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was the chief guest.

Mr Sinha said that use of tobacco in any form was injurious to health. Of the total cancer cases, 50 per cent men had become victims to this deadly disease due to the use of tobacco. Similarly, 25 per cent women were suffering from cancer owing to the use of tobacco or passive smoking. The schoolchildren, he said, could play an important role by impressing upon their parents and other family members to give up this habit. He hoped that the Bal Swasthya Mela would bring fruitful and positive results.

Mrs Dikshit said that children were the present of today and future of tomorrow. The Bal Swasthya Mela, first of its kind in the country, was aimed at creating health awareness in the children. She said that if children would be healthy, so would be the family, society and country.
