Patient-psychiatrist ratio low in India
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 12
Even as the basic psychiatric facilities in majority of the hospitals in the region are lacking, social stigma coupled with false belief about mental illness being the result of evil spirits and bad deeds makes the situation even more deplorable.

The results of the District Mental Health programme launched in the Civil Hospital, Mani Majra, revealed that more than 57 per cent of those suffering from psychiatric problem had never taken prior treatment, while 28 per cent were irregular in their treatment.

The most common age group found to be suffering from mental ailments was between 20 to 39 years, with a mere 13 per cent of the patients being above the age of 50. While the more common problem amongst the male was of substance dependence on stuff like alcohol, opioid, sedatives and nicotine, women on the other hand indicated higher incidence of depression and anxiety disorders.

The doctors who undertook the programme during the last one year have stressed the need for decentralisation of psychiatric services in the hospitals in the region so that timely treatment can be provided to the patients. The Civil Hospital, Mani Majra, has been running the District Mental Health Programme for the past one year under the aegis of the Psychiatry Department of the Government Medical College and Hospital headed by Dr B.S. Chavan.

Even though experts point out that at least 10 to15 per cent Indians need the services of mental health professionals at least once in their life time. But unfortunately there is only one psychiatrist for a population of one lakh. In the western countries like the USA, this ratio is 1: 3500 and in Denmark it is 1:800.
