BJP to expel 10 rebel MLAs in UP New Delhi, November 11 “I have asked the state unit to take this action against these members as they have crossed the lakshman rekha by this action,” Mr Naidu informed newspersons here. Mr Naidu said the party was open to discussions with any of its functionaries or cadres to resolve issues and “they should refrain from indulging in any such activities which went against the party interests.” He said despite senior leaders, including former party president Kushabhau Thakre, former states unit president Kalraj Mishra, going to UP to sort out the issue, they failed to bring the dissidents around. When they distance themselves through their words and actions like sponsoring an Independent for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections, the party was left with no option but to take a serious note, Mr Naidu asserted. The party directive is an instruction to the state unit to expel the MLAs from the Legislature BJP Party and communicate the same to the Speaker under the Representation of People Act. Mr Naidu’s instruction to the state unit follows a series of discussions with senior party leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani. On the dissidents’ move to meet top party leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, to resolve the issue, he said they were welcome to talks, but they had “crossed the limits.” Mr Naidu said party functionaries were free to meet the leadership at various levels and “if they have any grievance, they could express it at the party forum and normal channels but not air publicly any statements which will damage the party”. The party President ruled out meeting the 10 MLAs who had signed nomination papers of Suresh Nanda, saying “Whoever falls within the partyfold is welcome to meet the party President. Not those who have crossed the lakshman rekha and publicly signed the nomination papers of Suresh Nanda.” Asked whether action against the 10 MLAs would not endanger the BSP-BJP coalition in Uttar Pradesh, he said even after taking action against the 10 who signed the nomination papers, there was no danger to the Mayawati government and an assurance to this effect had been given by the state unit.” |
Amar Singh courts
arrest with workers
Lucknow, November 11 Amar Singh, on his arrival here, drove to the Hazratganj area to lead the SP workers who had assembled there to gherao the Raj Bhavan, police sources said. Before courting arrest, Amar Singh alleged that he along with the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit general secretary, Mr Shivpal Singh Yadav, were manhandled by some people at the behest of the police at the Amausi airport. He said the “dictatorial attitude” of the Mayawati government and its “repressive measures” would not succeed in gagging the voice of the people of the state. The police sources said the Samajwadi Party workers turned violent at many places torching vehicles, thereby forcing the police to use mild force to disperse them. Three vehicles were torched near the Hazratganj crossing here, they said. Rail traffic was also disrupted in some districts, reports said, adding that hundreds of SP activists were arrested in Bhadoi, Mainpuri Basti, Santkabir Nagar, Etawah and other places.

Modi lambasts Congress Godhra, November 11 Mr Modi also could not think of any better place than Godhra to revive the Hindu sentiments, recounted the gory train massacre here on February 27 and said “burning of people do not go together with flying white pigeons. “Longon Ko Jinda Jalane Ke Badh Kabootar Nahin Udta Hai,” he said accusing the minority community of not condemning past incidents. Stating that the communal violence which could not have occurred had the Congress immediately expressed its concern over the killings and did not indulge in raising hue and cry and launching a disinformation campaign on what followed, Mr Modi struck a moral posture saying, “However, in a good society there is no room for communal killings and massacres. Accusing the Congress of wilfully engaging in damaging the pride of Gujarat not only within the country but also in abroad, Mr Modi said “while I launched Gaurav Yatra through the lanes and
bylanes of hundreds of villages to protect the self-respect of five crore Gujaratis, the Opposition party leaders deemed it fit to go to the USA to launch a disinformation campaign.” Trying to trace the genesis of communal violence in the state, Mr Modi said, “Had the
Muslims isolated those persons from their community, who indulged in gruesome violence against the majority community beginning attack on Sindhis in 1979 to the Godhra massacre, this kind of situation would not have emerged in the state.”

Religious extremism lethal: PM New Delhi, November 11 Inaugurating the seventh meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of the National Human Rights Institutions here on today evening, Mr Vajpayee called upon on all countries of the world to combat the menace of international terrorism. “Respect for all faiths and protection of pluralism should be recognised as an obligation for all countries in the world.” He said India was the worst sufferer of the scourge of international terrorism which had claimed 60,000 lives in Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere during the past two decades. “All forms of terrorism are dangerous but the one inspired by religious extremism is especially lethal. It strikes at innocent lives. It targets our symbol of freedom. As we have seen in J&K, Northern Ireland and other troubled spots, it has deprived entire generations of their birthright of peaceful existence and economic progress.” |
