Burglars strike at Sec 11 house
35 tola gold, valuables stolen
Chandigarh, November 11
Burglars decamped with about 35 tolas of gold jewellery and three to four bank fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) from a Sector 11 house. The burglars appeared to be ‘‘professionals’’ as the police could not find any finger prints and if there were any, those were wiped off. The entire house was also ransacked.

Traders’ lobby cries foul over rent Act amendments
Chandigarh, November 11
The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal hardened its stance to protest against the recent amendments to the rent Act saying first the notification has to be withdrawn only then some kind new formula can be arrived at.

Heavy rush at the BSNL counters, after the launching of cellular services from today has forced its competitors to announce competitive package on the very first day. Spice Telecom, a major competitor in Punjab and Chandigarh offered a special package of zero monthly rental (with Rs 99 CLI optional charges) with a commitment of minimum Rs 399 monthly airtime usage.

NRI remanded in custody
Kharar, November 11
Mr Roshan Lal Chouhan, Judicial Magistrate, Kharar, has remanded Sarabjit Singh, an alleged member of international gang of smugglers, in Judicial custody till January 10. The accused a US citizen and wanted by a US court, was arrested by the SAS Nagar police.

No let up in illegal mining by HUDA contractors
Panchkula, November 11
Haryana Urban Development Authority is allegedly mining river bed material (RBM) from the restricted area around the new Ghaggar bridge near Madanapur village for construction of guide bundhs on the downstream of the river.
HUDA contractors have been illegally lifting sand from the restricted area in the Ghaggar river bed (a pit dug near the new Ghaggar bridge can be seen in the picture) for construction of guide bundhs (as seen on the extreme end of river banks) in Panchkula.

Rape ‘victim’ seeks action against police
Chandigarh, November 11
Adding a new twist to the on going controversy, a Shimla district resident who was allegedly raped by a Sector 20 resident today sought action against the police authorities for “wilfully, deliberately and knowingly” disobeying the orders passed by the UT Additional Sessions Judge.

The Chandigarh Police is reportedly considering a proposal mooted by a social organisation for asking commuters to carry identity slips with them while travelling on the city roads and streets.

Health scheme for ex-servicemen
E
X-servicemen are the only Central Government pensioners in the country whose medicare is not the responsibility of the Central Government. They, about seventyfive lakh in number, get treatment at military hospitals on an ad hoc basis only if the existing resources at these hospitals permit this. For no extra staff or equipment is authorised to military hospitals for their treatment.

The seventh martyrdom day of Capt. Rohit Kaushal was observed at his native village of Jalauli today. Col. Mahesh Kumar from Western Command, Subedar Rattan Chand, officers and others from 18th Punjab Regiment and officers of 14th Punjab Regiment paid floral tributes at his memorial.

The Central Government Pensioners’ Welfare Society, a newly constituted body, in its first meeting held here yesterday urged the Central Government to fully honour its commitment regarding the payment of minimum wages (50 per cent of the actual revised scale) with effect from January 1, 1996.

Landlord held in currency racket
Panchkula, November 11
The police today arrested Mr Inder Sen Garg, a resident of Sector 15, who had rented out a portion of his house to the accused in the fake currency racket on charges of not getting his tenant verification done.

Key man in hawala racket nabbed
SAS Nagar, November 11
A person believed to be one of the key figures of an international drug trafficking and hawala racket was nabbed by the SAS Nagar police from Phase IX here. More than 40000 US Dollars (approx. Rs 20 lakh) and Rs 6 lakh, FDRs worth Rs 4 lakh along with a host of household expensive items have been recovered from the accused.

Flesh trade racket busted
Panchkula, November 11
The police today busted a flesh trade racket and arrested three persons, including two girls from Sector 19. The police had received secret information that the accused were running a flesh trade racket.

Pocket picked at Jagat cinema
Chandigarh, November 11
Pocket of a SAS Nagar resident, Mr MS Bedi, was allegedly picked at the Jagat Cinema, Sector 17, during the matinee show yesterday. The pick pocket could not be apprehended. A case has been registered.

2-day training programme opens
Chandigarh, November 11
A two-day training programme on ‘Pollution measurement and monitoring instrument’ as part of the National Technology Day celebrations was inaugurated at the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) under the sponsorship of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology. Around 25 students from all over Punjab participated in the programme.

Lively show by foreign students

A myriad of different cultures joined hands in a most spectacular fashion as different segments of foreign students residing in the city put up a show the at Tagore Theatre this evening. The occasion was to celebrate ‘The International Students Day’, a day dedicated to the memory of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the founder of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

‘Mahi Mereya’ released

To lip sync is to kill the art of singing. This was stated by film producer Ajit Sailani after releasing Punjabi pop songs cassette ‘Mahi Mereya’, at a press conference held here today.

Rupande Shah is all for promoting classical music among the younger generation. Vastness of basic elements captured on canvas

“Panch Mahabhota” or the five basic elements of life have found a new meaning in Parveen Kumar Rajput’s work, through amalgamation and unification with each other to create life and each invariably depicting a sound philosophy through simple brush strokes. The artist through a series of 10 paintings in oil has captured the significance of Aakash, Jal, Vayu, Agni and Prithvi in creation of life.

Plan for ‘child scan’ in 10 schools

To be introduced in 10 city schools, the Apollo Child Scan plans to eliminate “lifestyle-related medical and health risks faced by today’s stressed child in a highly competitive world. Kidney removed using advanced laparoscopy

Taking another step forward towards its growth, GMCH-32, here, has carried out a new technique in the surgery of the kidney. Using the keyhole procedure of surgery that does not require a big incision on the stomach, doctors from the Surgery Department have successfully carried out Advanced Laparoscopy to remove an infected and dead kidney from a 45-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh.
