Chhattisgarh School qualify for Super League

New Delhi, November 6
Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Jashpur Nagar (Chhattisgarh) beat Government Inter-College, Narender Nagar (Uttaranchal) 3-0 to enter the Super League of the 20th Nehru Sub-Junior Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Wednesday.

In a one-sided match, Manoj Tirkey scored a field goal in the 46th minute to open the account. Anup Ekka added the second goal nine minutes later while Mukesh Lakra completed the tally four minutes later.

Maulana Azad Higher Secondary School, Bhopal trounced Fr. Agnel High School, Pilar, Tiswadi (Goa) 5-0. Four of the goals came in the first half. Azam Baig scored a field goal in the second minute to start the goal-rush. Nine minutes later, M Amir struck home the second goal. M Iqbal Khan powered home the third and fourth goals in the span of six minutes to complete the first half scoring.

On resumption, M Razique added the fifth goal in the 38th minute.

Before the start of the second match, a two-minute silence was observed in the memory of Olympian Joginder Singh “Gindi”, who died in Kolkata on Wednesday morning.

Gindi was a product of Delhi, and had represented India in the 1960 (Rome) and 1964 (Tokyo) Olympic Games. The Nehru Hockey Society had organised a benefit match for him in 1999 and had collected Rs 8.50 lakh for his kidney treatment.

Sareen named observer for Vijayawada match

New Delhi, November 6
Dr S. S. Sareen has been appointed as observer by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for the one-day international match for the TVS Cup between India and the West Indies, to be played at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, on November 24.

Dr Sareen, who is the joint-secretary (club) of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), is the third official from the DDCA to be nominated in one capacity or other for the on-going series against the West Indies.

Former international umpire Dr Ram Babu Gupta has been retained as the co-ordinator of the Indian team for the one-day series after holding the same post in the Test series earlier. Mr Batra, another senior DDCA official, has also been appointed observer for a one-day match.

Dr Sareen is a seasoned sports official, whose association with the DDCA spans several years. He was earlier secretary of the DDCA. He had also been associated with the Women’s Cricket Association of India for a number of years.

Air Force, City enter semis

Indian Air Force (Palam), and City Club sailed into the semi-finals of the first Lt. Governor’s Cup Prize Money Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Wednesday. Indian Air Force beat DSA League runners-up Indian Nationals 5-4 via tie-breaker while City Club eclipsed former champions Moonlight 2-0. After a goalless regulation period, tie-breaker shootout was applied in which Libesh, P B Sangdingliya, Champia and Jasmeet Singh scored for Air Force while only Harish Bisht, Shekhar Khanna, Aftab Ashraf and Joginder Rawat could find the mark for Nationals. For City Club, Michael and Kabul Tyagi scored a goal in each half. Thursday’s fixtures: Shahdara vs B B Stars (12.45 pm); Hindustan vs Simla Youngs (2.45 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.

Cavalry, RVC enter polo semis

Remount and Veterinary College beat Hur by four and a half goals to four and 61 Cavalry B beat JPC by five goals to three to enter the semi-finals of the Maharaja Prithi Singh Cup (six-goal) Polo Tournament at the Army Equestrian Centre Polo ground on Wednesday.

Thursday’s fixtures: Maharaja Prithi Cup: ASC vs IMA (10.30 am); 61 Cavalry A vs Kinnarps (11.30 am)—Army Equestrian Centre ground. Indian Open Polo: McDowell’s vs Haryana Polo Club (2.30 pm)— Jaipur Polo Ground.

Arjun Pawar cracks century for St Mary’s

Arjun Pawar cracked a stroke-filled 118 as Mount St. Mary’s beat Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan by eight wickets and entered the semi-final of the sixth Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Mount St. Mary’s School ground at Delhi Cantt.

Scores: Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan (first innings): 201 all out in 57 overs (Rishi Bhardwaj 64, Chetan Bisth 46, Sahan John 5 for 61, Pragat Singh 3 for 64. Second innings: 154 all out in 34 overs (Siddarth Sahni 50, Ankit Chaddha 8 for 64).

Mount St. Mary’s School (first innings): 280 all out in 59.3 (Arjun Pawar 118, Pargat Singh 54, Amanpreet 35, Rishi Bhardwaj 5 for 118, Yudhisthir Singh 2 for 95). Second innings: 78 for 2 in 13 overs (Arjun Pawar 40, Yash Vardhan 20 n o).

Apollo Tyres win in Eventus Cup

Apollo Tyres defeated Fritolay India by seven wickets with eight overs to spare in a league match of the second Eventus Cup Cricket Tournament at the Airport Authority of India ground.

Scores: Fritolay India: 121 for 8 in 25 overs (Kuldeep Kumar 50, 65b, 4x4; Ram Avtar 22 n o, 24b; Gagan Sharma 3 for 20, Gautam Bhalla 3 for 16).

Apollo Tyres: 122 for 3 wickets in 17 overs (Sawan Kumar 52, 51b, 4x9, Manu Bhatia 2 for 28). Sawan Kumar was named the Man of the Match. In another match, NDTV defeated Churchill India by five runs.

Scores: NDTV: 143 for 9 wickets in 25 overs (Ravi Kumar 27, 28b; Ranjit Kumar 22, 17b; Raghav Wahi 3 for 18, Subroto Ghosh 2 for 24).

Churchill India: 138 all out in 22.5 overs (Nitin Suri 41, 34b; Raghav Wahi 33, 52b; Deepak Sharma 4 for 19; Rishi Kumar 2 for 21). Deepak Sharma was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Harbans Singh Cricket

The sixth Sardar Harbans Singh Sistani Memorial Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament will be held at the S S Khalsa School ground, Lajpat Nagar, from November 7. Sixteen teams will participate in the tournament. Last year’s runners-up S S Khalsa School will take on Guru Harkishan Public School, Hemkund in the opening match. Sardar Narender Singh Sistani will inaugurate the tournament.

Chairman of the tournament committee Captain Lakhinder Singh Bahl said defending champions Salwan Boys, DL DAV, Frank Anthony Public School, Blue Bells and Green Field are some of the other prominent school teams participating in the tournament.

Hudco beat Lucent

Hudco beat Lucent Technologies by 33 runs in the sixth D G Phadkar Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Teri Oval.

Scores: Hudco: 158 for 8 in 25 overs (Sashi Bhushan 59, 8x4, 1x6; Ramesh Negi 23, 3x4, Jai Shankar 3 for 26, Rajesh Singh 2 for 30).

Lucent Technologies: 125 all out in 25 overs (Karan Singh 47, 6x4; Soumendra Kar 18, Jai Shankar 17, Ramesh Negi 3 for 19, Mukesh Kumar 2 for 41). Sashi Bhushan was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Orient Craft beat GE Capital by four wickets at the Central Secretariat ground.

Scores: G E Capital: 114 for 8 in 25 overs (Prakhar Singhal 21, 2x4; Mohinder 3 for 13, Shailender 2 for 18, Dayal 2 for 18). Orient Craft: 117 for 6 in 24.2 overs (Sunil Karra 24, 2x4; Mohinder 15, 1x4; Rodney Charles 2 for 14, Binod Patnaik 2 for 18). Mohinder was named the Man of the Match.

Hansraj shine in roller skating

Hansraj Model School, Punjabi Bagh won 26 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals in the first Dwarka Invitational Roller Skating Championship at the Dwarka Sports Complex. The following skaters emerged victorious in speed skating.

Boys: S Sudesh, Lakshit Minocha, Ankit Wadhwa, Chirag Verma, Rishabh Singh, Sumit Khurana, Yogesh Verma, Archit Sharma and Nitin Duggal.

Girls: Radhika Khanna, Bhavya Khanna, Radhika Dhanwal, Sristi Roy, Shefali Sharma, Raveena Chauhan, Madhuri Sharma and Arpita Kohli. The Hansraj School team is coached by Subhash.

Best medical cover for National Games

New Delhi, November 6
The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in association with the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), have formulated a comprehensive medical cover and facilities for over 10,000 sportspersons and officials for the 32nd National Games, to be held from December 13 to 22 in Hyderabad and Vishakhapatnam.

Each of the 19 venues of the National Games will have a dedicated Static Medical Unit (SMU) and a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) with state-of-the-art equipment. A round-the-clock medical centre will become operational at the Games Village. Over 200 doctors and paramedics will be dedicatedly working to make this medical cover for the Games a big success.

Indian Open Polo from today

New Delhi, November 6
The Indian Open Polo Championship will be held from November 7 to 17 at the Jaipur Polo ground. The teams will feature India’s top professionals and also some of the renowned polo players from Argentina, United Kingdom and New Zealand.

The participating teams are Indian Army, Haryana Polo Club, Royal Kashmir/Sahgal Stud, McDowell’s Signature and Jindal Steel and Power. The championship will be played as a full league. The Indian Open Polo is considered as the official National Championship of Polo in India.

Corporate Cricket at Teri

Air Sahara, led by Chief Executive Officer U K Bose, will take on NIIT, led by chairman R S Pawar, in the opening match of the William Grant’s Corporate Cricket-Delhi leg, to be played at the Teri Oval, Gurgaon, on November 8 and 9. Top corporate teams are taking part in the two-day tournament.
