Meet on police reforms today
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 3
To stress the need for implementing the recommendations of the National Police Commission on police reforms and to make the police force more public-friendly, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, in collaboration with the Editors Guild and FICCI, is organising a round-table conference on police reforms tomorrow.

The conference will be inaugurated by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and the valedictory address will be given by Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani. The conference will focus on various models and structures that could insulate the police from extraneous influences and arrangements, which are needed to ensure greater police accountability.

Mr C. V. Narasimhan, member secretary of the National Police Commission, said that the public was not at all satisfied with the police investigations. “Police investigations are subjected to pressure and the police officers cannot act independently. As a result, in most of the cases, only innocent people were being punished,” he said.

He said that the commission’s core recommendation was to implement an Act, which entailed access to the police case dairy to a multi-member body. Now, only select people like police officials and the ruling party have access to the case diary, which makes objective investigation very difficult.
