YMCA chalks out a hectic sports calendar
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 11
The New Delhi YMCA is famous for the excellent boxing championship its conducts every year than any other sporting activity it indulges in, though the Jai Sigh Road complex has facilities for a number of sports. No wonder, the YMCA also organises other sports events, but on a low-key basis, and as a result, its sporting feats by and large go unnoticed.

This year, the YMCA will organise four major sporting events, starting with the sixth YMCA Delhi State Body-Building Championship on October 4-5. Then, after a few weeks’ gap, the sixth YMCA Delhi State Volleyball Tournament will be held from November 11 to 15.

The sixth YMCA Inter-College Basketball Tournament will be held from December 11 to 14 and the season will conclude with the popular YMCA International Boxing Championships to be held from February 4 to 8, 2003.

The YMCA Body Building Championship is a very popular event with the youth as around 250 “body beautifuls” participate in the event every year to flex their muscles and flaunt their ‘body beautifuls’. The event has been recognised by the Delhi Amateur Body Building Association.

Top teams of Delhi like Railways, Air Force, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Police, Delhi University, Dayal Singh College, Vivekananda College, Jesus and Mary College, Jaunty Club, Miranda House, Stickers’ Club etc participate in the volleyball tournament.

The Inter-College Basketball Tournament also attracts the cream like Hindu, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Venkateshwara, Kirorimal, Zakir Hussain, Lady Shri Ram, St. Stephen’s etc.

And of course, the YMCA boxing attracts the best talent from India and some foreign countries. The YMCA has facilities for tennis, swimming, table tennis, badminton, billiards, karate and an air-conditioned fitness centre.

It’s tennis academy is being run by former Indian Davis Cup player Shyam Minotra.

Sahara changes sponsorship logo
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 11
The ICC-BCCI tussle had the biggest fall out on the Sahara India Pariwar, the sponsors of the Indian cricket team, as they were forced to change the logo used for the sponsorship, in order to protect the interest of the players. Instead of “Sahara”, it’s now “Subrata”.

Sahara had signed an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the sponsorship of the Indian cricket team. This sponsorship, which ensured that the players and the BCCI got the largest ever sponsorship fees for any cricket team across the world, was undertaken by Sahara India Pariwar in the spirit of protecting “national pride so as to ensure that a truly Indian brand sponsored the Indian team”.

While the sponsorship contract was signed for a period of three years, starting on June 2001, Sahara was informed by the BCCI in July 2002 that the sponsorship was in conflict with the South African Airways — a sponsor of the ICC – and this conflict was both for the ICC Knockout Tournament and the World Cup.

A clarification from Sahara that the company that signed the sponsorship was not in the airlines business was not accepted by ICC and BCCI, and Sahara was told that as Air Sahara was a group company, therefore, there was conflict.

“This stance was taken by ICC-BCCI despite the fact that not only was the logo of Air Sahara completely different from the logo used for the sponsorship but also South African Airways and Air Sahara operate in completely different sectors and there is no way in which either of them could lose a single passenger seat to the other,” Sahara said.

The final decision by ICC that the sponsorship logo could have any name provided that it did not contain the name “Sahara” left Sahara with no option, but to change the sponsorship logo to “Subrata” in the interest of “national pride”.

Team MRF win second title
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 11
Team MRF Tyres’ Stuart Warren (Darryl Judd), driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo7, emerged triumphant in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) Group N for the team’s second consecutive rally victory in the 2002 championship. In the process, Stuart Warren closed in on APRC Group N leader Nico Caldarola on points with two more rounds to go in the series.

Warren, the overnight leader in the category, said he didn’t take any chances. The victory (16 points, including bonus) takes Warren’s APRC Group N points tally to 40 as he closes in on current leader, Italian Nico Caldarola, with two more rounds to go in China in October and Thailand in November. Warren said the rains made it slushy and re-running on it was dangerous. “What really helped us were the MRF tyres.

The newly developed MRF rally tyres are solid and sound and should help us again in China”, he added. Warren timed 3:29.48.9 overall, keeping Leyraud at bay by well over two minutes. He also finished third in the APRC overall and seventh in the open event.
