Nurses harden stand on vacation issue
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 11
The nurses residing in Nivedita Nursing Hostel at the PGI, are up in arms against the move of the authorities to get rooms vacated from them to accommodate lady doctors in one of the wings of their hostel.

“Though the initial arrangement is to give 10 rooms in our hostel to doctors, that too on a temporary basis, now we are in for trouble as some of the nurses residing in E Block have been asked to move out at the earliest,” rued the nurses. They said while there were four hostels for the doctors, there was only one for the nurses and now they were being asked to move out.

The nurses said they were being asked to move out by their warden, though no orders from the Director or any other senior functionary had been shown to them. “We are not even sure if the orders for vacation have come from the top, as we have not been taken into confidence, as has been the tradition in the past,” said the nurses. They decided not to move out till the PGI Director clarified his stand on the issue.

“If there are some extra rooms in the hostel, our demand for giving them to married nurses should have been accepted rather than accommodating the doctors,” said the nurses. They said last time, when a decision had been taken to give 10 rooms to the doctors temporarily, they were taken into confidence.

The meeting between the representatives of the Nurses Welfare Association and the Administration took place on July 31, where all issues were discussed. It was also discussed at the meeting that after the student nurses shifted to CON building, blocks E and D of Nivedita Hostel would be converted into married nurses’ hostel.

The president of the Nurses Welfare Association, Mr Lakhwinder Singh, said the direction of the authorities asking nurses to vacate rooms for doctors was uncalled for as the nurses would face inconvenience. “Moreover, interviews for appointing about 50 new nurses was held yesterday. We fail to understand where will they be accommodated if more and more rooms are given to lady doctors,” he said.

He said since there was only one hostel for nurses, it was wrong to give rooms to doctors. He said he was hopeful that the authorities would reconsider the matter, failing which a general body meeting would be convened to chalk out the future course of action.

SAS Nagar, September 11
A three-day special camp organised to popularise stichless vasectomy among men planning to undergo sterlisation ended at the ESI Hospital here today.

The camp which had been organised by the ESI authorities in collaboration with Ranbaxy India limited was declared to be highly successful with 43 such operations carried out in these three days.

Inaugurated on September 9 by the Director Health Services, ESI, Punjab, Dr G.L. Goel, the camp aimed at not only popularising this particular procedure among men by creating awareness but also training doctors in conducting this procedure on men. Dr Goel pointed out that 98 per cent of sterlisation procedures are performed on women and this needs to be changed.

Five doctors from various ESI hospitals in the state were trained in the procedure by Dr R.C. Kaza, Head of the Department of Surgery, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, who is the national trainer for this procedure.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kaza pointed out that the NSV (non scalpel vasectomy) procedure was introduced in the country in 1992 and was very popular in Sikkim, Kerela and Andhra Pradesh and with due awareness, this option of sterlisation among men is likely to catch up in Punjab also.

Dr S.S. Walia, SMO in charge of the hospital, stated that “Punjabi males have certain hesitations in coming forward for conventional vasectomy but this method is bound to be popular. The response to the camp has been tremendous and this trend will continue”, he said. According to Salig Ram, a 34-year-old who underwent this procedure during this camp, he had no problem at all in recuperating after the procedure. All those who have been operated upon are back to normal life within an hour of the operation.
