Inaugurated on September 9 by the Director Health Services, ESI, Punjab, Dr G.L. Goel, the camp aimed at not only popularising this particular procedure among men by creating awareness but also training doctors in conducting this procedure on men. Dr Goel pointed out that 98 per cent of sterlisation procedures are performed on women and this needs to be changed. Five doctors from various ESI hospitals in the state were trained in the procedure by Dr R.C. Kaza, Head of the Department of Surgery, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, who is the national trainer for this procedure. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kaza pointed out that the NSV (non scalpel vasectomy) procedure was introduced in the country in 1992 and was very popular in Sikkim, Kerela and Andhra Pradesh and with due awareness, this option of sterlisation among men is likely to catch up in Punjab also. Dr S.S. Walia, SMO in charge of the hospital, stated that “Punjabi males have certain hesitations in coming forward for conventional vasectomy but this method is bound to be popular. The response to the camp has been tremendous and this trend will continue”, he said. According to Salig Ram, a 34-year-old who underwent this procedure during this camp, he had no problem at all in recuperating after the procedure.
