timekeepers of Asiad New Delhi, September 2 The Asian Games are a unique sporting event bringing together people from all over Asia. Since they were first held in 1951 in New Delhi, the Asian Games have been growing in popularity and reputation, and have become the most important sports event in Asia. The Asian Games held in Bangkok in 1988, and also sponsored jointly by Tissot and Longines, have attracted a cumulative television audience of over three billion viewers worldwide. At the 14th Asian Games in Busan, 7000 athletes from 42 nations will join together to present a celebration of sporting excellence. Competitions will take place in 38 different sporting disciplines and 43 competition venues have been specially prepared to host all competitions. Any major event on the scale of the Asian Games creates an immense amount of data, times and scores that need to be processed and distributed to a watching world. In Busan, Longines and Tissot’s activities entail the coordination of a vast array of equipment and instrumentation, developed for specific sporting disciplines, ranging from touch pads used in the swimming pool through rotating score boards used in all gymnastics events. After being processed for display on the spot, the information is passed on for data handlers and Television companies who broadcast it worldwide. |
