Arrest vindicates corruption charges

A Sub-Inspector in the Enforcement Department of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) was arrested by the CBI for accepting bribe from rehri-phariwalas in Sector 17 here this evening. The SI, D.P. Singh, used to collect money through a tout, Shalinder Kumar Pandey, who himself was a rehriwala.

PGI OTs closed again

Despite extensive repairs to plug the leakage in the operation theatres (OTs) on the fifth floor of Nehru Hospital at the PGI, the authorities have been forced to close these for the second time in a month, following a heavy downpour.

Ram Lal back in city?
Chandigarh, August 29
Investigations by the Chandigarh police in the “rape” case involving a girl in her twenties has revealed that the main suspect in the case, Ram Lal, who is on the run, had physical contact with the victim at a Panchkula hotel on August 13 — the day the alleged plot was hatched.

BJP holds dharna against Cong ‘misdeeds’

The local unit of the BJP today held a dharna in front of the MC office to highlight ‘failures’ of the Congress-ruled corporation and its MP Pawan Bansal, daring him to get the BJP leaders arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged on ‘baseless’ charges.

‘Boycott power bills’ payment’

Two held for assaulting girl
Chandigarh, August 29
On complaint of a girl, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, two persons, Abhey and Ashish, residents of the same colony, were arrested as they allegedly assaulted and threatened the girl with intention to outrage her modesty. The incident had taken place near Sector 26 kerosene pump last evening. The accused were arrested under Sections 354 and 506 of the IPC.

‘Legislation needed to streamline exam system’
Chandigarh, August 29
Panjab University needs to draft a legislation pertaining to various aspects of the examination system in order to streamline the system, said Dr Amrik Singh, a former Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, in his inaugural address at the seminar on “Setting on question paper — quality and format” organised by Panjab University at the ICSSR Complex here yesterday.

Janmashtami celebrations were held in different schools of SAS Nagar here today. The students of Spring Valley Public School came to the school dressed up as Lord Krishna, Radha and Sudama.

Suspected cholera case in Palsora
Chandigarh, August 29
The outbreak of gastroenteritis and cholera in certain slum areas and rehabilitation colonies seems to have been contained as apart from one suspected cholera case from Palsora, only six persons suffering from gastroenteritis were admitted to the government hospitals in the city today.

Day for whom?

Today was National Sports Day. But what was ironical was that only a handful of people were involved in the celebrations. The government officials also did the formality and that too was negligible on this day, which is also the birth anniversary of the hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. It may be recalled that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, had declared his birth anniversary to be celebrated as National Sports Day.
