Day for whom?
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, August 29
Today was National Sports Day. But what was ironical was that only a handful of people were involved in the celebrations. The government officials also did the formality and that too was negligible on this day, which is also the birth anniversary of the hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. It may be recalled that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, had declared his birth anniversary to be celebrated as National Sports Day.

A former national level sportsman commented, ‘When our youth celebrate Valentine’s day, Friendship Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Rose Day, why then they cannot unite themselves in truly celebrating this day with much fanfare.

Various sports experts feel that apart from organising hockey matches, sports quiz, debates, awareness campaigns showed also be organised to encourage mass participation. The Administration could have come out with banners or posters to make people aware people about this day, they opined.

There was no ‘ friendly hockey match’ today in the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium. The match was planned in order to celebrate the birthday of Dhyan Chand, hockey wizard and National Sports Day by the Chandigarh Sports Department.
