Cop suspended for extorting money from bus passenger
Ludhiana, August 28
The district police authorities today suspended a constable of the PCR motorcycle squad and booked him on the charges of extorting money from a bus passenger, besides beating the bus conductor after a large number of employees of the Punjab Road Transport Corporation and other transport departments blocked traffic on the Ludhiana-Ferozepore road near Agar Nagar for over an hour this morning.

Contractors’ bills held up

A resolution adopted by the Finance and Contracts Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation has created a piquant situation in which bills of contractors for development works of different kinds, which stood executed, were held up for payment, and other works in various stages of execution face the threat of being halted. Not only this, the axe is likely to fall on certain officials, who, overstepping their limits, are said to have shown undue haste in issuing work orders for the tenders immediately after the issuing of the “model code of conduct” for the then civic elections.

MLA accused of misbehaviour
Ludhiana, August 28
Ms Barjinder Kaur, a former Congress councillor, today accused the sitting party MLA from Samrala, Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, of misbehaving with her and passing obscene remarks during the party’s anti-corruption protest demonstration held here in front of the Mini-Secretariat.

Cong workers don’t mind using Tricolour as party flag

Congress workers do not seem to mind using the National Flag as the party flag as there are many similarities between the two. The flags were used in abundance today at its protest demonstration against ‘corrupt practices’ of the NDA government at the Centre.

Absence of facilities at railway station decried

The Friends Citizen Council , Ludhiana, has decried the absence of basic amenities at the local railway station. In a press note here yesterday, Mr Ramman Goomber, president of the council, said while the population of the city has increased manifold over the past 15 years, the railway station remains much the same.

Self-employment schemes launched

Mr Vikas Partap, Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, inaugurated a one day workshop, organised by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in collaboration with the Child-development and Project Officer (CDPO), Amloh, for awareness to provide employment under the self-help group (SHG) here on today.

BoP employees hold demonstration

Employees of the Bank of Patiala yesterday held a demonstration at three places in protest against various “anti-union policies” of the management of the bank. The employees have alleged that the management of the bank is backing out of the agreement signed between the two sometime ago.

The Shri Sanatan Dharam Mahotsav Committee will take out its 52nd shobha yatra in connection with Janmashtami celebrations from the Daresi grounds tomorrow afternoon, according to Mr Madan Lal Chopra, chairman of the committee.

Dr Mukand Singh Brar, Senior Soil Chemist, Department of Soils, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, has been elected as vice-chairperson of the commission on Soil Technology of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) during the 17th world congress of Soil Science held in Bangkok recently.

An extension lecture was organised by the postgraduate department of Punjabi at G.N.N. College, Doraha, for the students of postgraduate classes, yesterday. Two senior most professors of Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Dr Gurmohan Singh Ahluwalia and Dr Joginder Singh Chhabra delivered lectures to the students.

Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Ludhiana Zone will organise a ‘Women Awareness Day’ at Mata Ganga Khalsa Girls College, Kotan (Ludhiana) on August 30. No check on abortions by quacks
Ludhiana, August 28
Under the new Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, those who conduct an abortion will have to either get a licence or get registered with the Health Department. But due to the callous attitude of the authorities concerned, MTPs continue to be conducted at more than 500 centres in the district by unregistered medical practitioners.

Medals for city schoolboys
Ludhiana, August 28
Students of the local Everest Public Senior Secondary School have won medals in various age-groups of the district-level Summer Field Games organised at Gill village. In the under-14 age-group of the tournament, Mandeep Singh of Class VIII and Vivek of Class IX won gold medals in judo competitions.

Admn gears up for Beant’s Martyrdom Day

Elaborate arrangements are being made to organise the state-level function to commemorate the Martyrdom Day of Beant Singh on August 31 at Payal. The local administration is expecting a large number of people to participate.

The district administration has banned the use of any uniform resembling that of the Army, BSF and the police since the same has been used by anti- social elements to commit crimes and has also warned their use by private security agencies for their personnel.
