DDA to organise prize money soccer tourneys
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 25
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Sports Management Board has decided to organise two prize money football tournaments in the Capital — for seniors and juniors — as part of its “Football Promotion Scheme”.

Though the DDA wanted to sponsor the Delhi Soccer Association Senior Division League, the idea has been shelved for the present as the DSA League has a major sponsor in the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) now.

The prize money soccer tournament will carry a total purse of Rs 1.5 lakh in the senior Division and Rs 75,000 in the junior division. The winners of the Senior Division will pocket Rs one lakh while the runners-up will get Rs 50,000.

In the Junior Division, the title winners will pocket Rs 50,000 while the runners-up will be awarded Rs 25,000.

The DDA had also undertaken a talent search of for boys in the under-16 and under-13 years age category to be trained at the Yamuna Sports Complex and Siri Fort Sports Complex respectively.

All the schools were informed about the trials and selection. Fifty children were selected—25 each in the Under-16 and Under-13 groups. Former FIFA referee Melvyn D’Souza was appointed as the technical adviser and R. Prashar was appointed as the chief coach. Ranjit Thapa, Jai Singh, Chaman Bhandari and Rakesh Joshi have been nominated as the coaches..

The scheme got going at the Siri Fort Sports Complex and the Yamuna Vihar Sports Complex from June 1.

Coaching is being imparted to the boys thrice a week. The DDA has allocated a separate budget of Rs 17.2 lakh for this scheme. Each trainee is being given Rs 50 per day, and also a full training kit, costing worth Rs 4,000.

The children will also be provided travel and tour expenses for matches whenever they participate in tournaments.

The players have also been given insurance cover. The DDA boys are presently taking part in the Nivia Tournament in Delhi. They have already won two matches.
