is that wondrous word, which is the foundation of all relationships, of all endeavours and all achievements. It carries the magic to transform, to empower, to elevate, to enlighten and to bring us closer to God. Faith is above beliefs, for beliefs can be shaken, but faith is steadfast. Faith is the binder of all humanity and when there is a breach of faith, cracks appear and lead to the collapse of the beautiful structure of a relationship. A child’s unquestioning faith in its parents reflects how god meant all relationships to be: “I said a little prayer for you today And know that god must have heard I felt the answer in my heart Although he spoke no word”. This is the prayer of a father for his terminally ill five-year-old son, who triumphed over illness, with faith in his doctor, his parents and God and above all in himself. Saint Augustine said, “ Faith is to believe what we do not see, The reward of this faith is to see what we believe”. Once when Narada Muni was on his way to meet Lord Krishna, he met a learned Brahmin. The Brahmin requested Narada to find out what Lord Krishna did for his recreation. Further along the way, Narada met a simple cobbler who made a similar request. When Narada repeated his requests, the Lord smiled and instructed him to tell them that as pastime he sits on his throne and passed big elephants through the eye of a needle. Narada conveyed the message to the Brahmin, who scorned and ridiculed Narada for fabricating the tale, however, the cobbler praised Lord Krishna for his glorious pastime. When Narada asked him how he could possibly believe that elephants could be passed through the eye of a needle the cobbler picked up the seed of the Banyan tree and pointing to it said that if the Lord could put such a huge Banyan tree in the seed he could also pass the elephants through the needle. Our faith determines our goals. It infuses a positive attitude in us and makes all endeavour and actions meaningful. For example, if a teacher has faith in the capability of a weak pupil, she would gain an insight to draw the best out of him and reinstate his self-esteem. But this a two way process and the student will have to repose faith in her. It is possible for human beings to betray one another’s faith, but God never betrays the faith of his devotees. It is in their prayers that true devotees find the strength to overcome crisis, face hardship and challenges. Faith is indeed a rare gift of God - the greatest treasure a man can possess. Madhu
