Chandigarh, August 21 The Bank of Punjab, ICICI and HDFC Bank, which are the primary account holders of Spice Telecom in Punjab, have received court notices during the past two days, asking them not to release any payments from the company accounts. Motorola, another equipment supplier to Spice, has already sued the company for non-payment of dues. Spice has to pay outstanding dues of Rs 225 crore to Motorola. It had approached courts in the UK and Mauritius against the promoters of the company seeking recovery of its dues. Talking to The Tribune, Mr Ashok Goyal, Executive Director, Spice Telecom, admitted that the company had received a copy of the order. However, he said,‘‘ Our advocates are examining the court order and a review petition will be filed against the decision.’’ Regarding the dispute with Siemens, he claimed, ‘‘Spice Telecom had a dispute with the Siemens over a payment of approximately Rs 250 crore. We have not made the payment and the Siemens had got a decision in its favour in the London court. However, it was not applicable in India. So the company approached the Delhi High Court, which has now issued that decision. However, we have not been informed about the decision, and it is ex parte decision. We are certainly going to challenge that decision.” Spice Telecom is a dominating player in the cellular market with over four lakh connections in Punjab and about 1,85,000 connections in Karnataka. Mr Ashok Goyal assured the customers and vendors that the company would not face any difficulty to clear the payments in time. All the payments would be made on time as the company have sufficient funds. He said, “further, we are hopeful of finding a way out soon to resolve the crisis.” |

Tips for success in business
New Delhi, August 21 "There's no substitute for the Sweaty Sticky Stuff," a leading corporate honcho told a marketing summit here. "If you ignore history you ignore the fact that the basic business acumen that is embedded in the Indian psyche is not lost. It needs to be rekindled and leveraged," said R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Rs. 250 billion diversified conglomerate Tata group. He was speaking at a seminar on The Business of Marketing organised by the CII here. "Unless you go out and interact with your customer's consumers, you won't get a feel of what your end-user thinks of your product," Gopalakrishnan contended. Giving credence to his view was a theme paper at the summit: "Marketing or the creation of a profitable customer (is) the single most critical responsibility across all aspects and departments of a business. And, if we subscribe to this axiom, then marketing is business and business is marketing." The event was the third in as many years and was meant to acquaint Indian CEOs of developments worldwide and enable them adapt these to the local conditions. Managers needed to be solidly rooted in history so that they could "focus on the DNA of Indian business and leverage this for the future," Gopalakrishnan held. "India has been a premier marketer for centuries but for an aberration of the past 50 years. From the time of Mohenjodaro (2,500-2,000 B.C.), Indians had been trading with Sumaria. Vasco da Gama found Calicut to be a thriving port with Arab and Chinese traders. He pointed out that between 1835 and 1945, Indian exports were ahead of imports and the country ranked fourth in world trade. Then came the "aberration" of independent India when imports overtook exports. CII director general Tarun Das elaborated on this. "Post-independence, we were a closed economy. There was an excessively long period of protection till the liberalisation era that began in 1991 and saw annual growth climbing to seven percent from three percent," Das explained. Gopalakrishnan reminded his audience that even in an era of globalisation, "seven out of 10 Indians continue to live in the rural areas and this is a huge market that remains to be tapped. "But you must remember that there is no substitute for the sweaty, sticky stuff. You have to go out there and convert what I call the non-consumer into a consumer." Said marketing guru Shunu Sen: "Business can't exist without customers. You have to continue to create customers at a profit if you want to survive."IANS |

Coca-Cola plans tea and juices
New Delhi, August 21 “We are looking at all categories of commercial beverages. We want to bring high quality products,” Coca Cola India President Alex Von Behr told reporters here. Mr Behr, however, declined to divulge details about the future products nor gave a time frame for their launch. He said the company was confident of overtaking Bisleri and emerging as leader in the domestic bottled-water segment this year. Quoting market research firm ORG-MARG data, he said Coca Cola’s water brand ‘Kinley’ currently had a 33 per cent market share as compared to market leader ‘Bisleri’ which commanded a 36 per cent share. Predicting a double-digit growth of domestic water market, Mr Behr said both Coca Cola and its co-packers would be investing in expanding bottling capacities as it was currently working at full capacity. This year, the company expects to produce about 30 million unit cases of bottled water, he said adding that it was also looking at increasing the number of bottling plants from the current 10. PTI |
AT&T to sell stake to AOL Time Warner New York, August 21 AT&T has also agreed to give AOL's Internet service access to its cable networks, giving the beleaguered Internet and media giant a much-needed pipeline for its high-speed service. The complex agreement ends more than eight years of negotiations, which languished amid disagreements over price, the venture's complex mix of businesses, and the two partners' own financial constraints. Under the deal, AT&T will receive $2.1 billion in cash and $1.5 billion in AOL common stock in exchange for its 27.6 per cent stake in TWE, which includes the Warner Bros. film studio, Home Box Office cable network and most of Time Warner Cable. AT&T also will get a 21 per cent stake in a cable TV business, Time Warner Cable, that AOL plans to take public. AT&T has said the deal will help it cut its debt load and strengthen its balance sheet as it prepares to sell its cable TV business, AT&T Broadband, to Comcast Corp. later this year. Reuters |
Calvin Klein rapped for perfume ad
London, August 21 The Advertising Standards Authority said on Wednesday it had received dozens of complaints about the poster, which showed the couple naked from the waist up kissing open-mouthed. The man had one hand holding a bottle of perfume which partly obscured the woman's breasts, while his other hand was inside the waistband of her trousers. Calvin Klein said the poster, which is no longer appearing, was not explicit and had been "tastefully photographed". It argued the ad "reflected the glamour, beauty and sensuality of the Calvin Klein brand", according to a statement on the ASA Website. But the ASA ruled the poster was likely to cause serious or widespread offence and was unsuitable to be seen by children. It warned Calvin Klein not to use similar images again. Reuters |
