Lasik surgery ‘safe’ for Indian eyes
Our Correspondent

New Delhi, August 5
The Delhi Ophthalmological Society (DOS) and the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI) today declared ‘Lasik ’ as safe for Indian eyes.

Addressing a press conference here today, the DOS and IIRSI pointed out that Lasik was a safe option, but conceded that strict criteria should be followed before the selection of patients for the surgery.

It was added that the patients should be informed of any possibility of complications arising because of the Lasik surgery.

Reacting to the criticism related to the surgery, the Opthamologists presented extensive data and cited published research findings to suggest that not only is the procedure safe, but criteria related to the success of the surgery are not specific to any race or ethnic group.

Contradicting reports that Lasik surgery was not suitable for Indian eyes as the cornea thickness was less here, Dr H K Tewari, Head of Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, clarified that no study was conducted at his Centre or anywhere else in the world, which suggested that there was an increase in the incidence of Retinal Detachment after Lasik was introduced.

President of the DOS, Dr. A K Grover and Scientific Committee Chairman of IIRSI, S Sachdev said, that Lasik has been in the country for past seven-years now with several lakh cases already treated. Not only does the collective practical experience of India’s Ophthalmologists proved the safety of the surgery, even the US FDA has approved Lasik for vision correction.

They said Lasik was a cosmetic surgery with a success rate of 98 per cent and the growing popularity of it was evidence of the surgery being safe.

It was pointed out that like any other surgical procedures, Lasik may also lead to a small rate of complications, which could be minimised by proper patient selection and meticulous surgery.

As for the risk of retinal detachment after Lasik, it was pointed out that it was an inherent risk of Myopia and no study from India or abroad had attributed Lasik surgery to the cause of retinal detachment directly or indirectly.

Musical chairs hamper Noida development
Parmindar Singh

Noida, August 5
Frequent transfers in UP during the last three months have so demoralised the IAS and IPS cadre officers that some of them keep their bag and baggage always packed, for no one knows when the next marching orders come a-knocking.

Transfers and postings being ordered within days of the officials taking charge at one place is playing havoc with the normal work, and particularly the development of places like Noida and Greater Noida, comments an officer. The Chief Executive Officer of Noida administration, Mr Vinode Malhotra, has been posted out within one month of taking over. All those officers who had been posted as CEOs, of Noida administration in the last one year, have been victim of bureaucratic groupism, with the result that Noida’s development work has suffered a lot.

With the assumption of office by the BSP-BJP Government in the state, people had thought that instability in the state was over. But the frequency of changes in CEO of Noida, has not only shocked the Noida administration officials, but the general public of the area as well.

The period of instability in Noida administration had began with the posting of Lalit Srivastava as CEO one and a half years ago. After a few days’ stay, he was replaced by R N Trivedi as CEO. He was succeeded by V K Malhotra after a while. Mr Malhotra’s clash with the then Industrial Development Commissioner, Mr S N Shukla, was the subject of talk in the whole state. Ultimately, the administration had to intervene between the two officials. V K Malhotra was posted out from Noida on March 27. He had handed over his charge to CEO-cum-chairman, Greater Noida, Brijesh Kumar who looked after the additional work for about a month. Mr Brijesh Kumar went to the Government of India on deputation on April 30 by handing over the charge to additional CEO Sanjeev Nayyar.

After five days, Sanjeev Nayyar was posted out of Noida. Dharmendra Dev Mishra joined as CEO-cum-chairman of Noida.

Within another 33 days, Vinode Malhotra too has been posted out. In this brief period, Mr Malhotra launched a number of schemes.

His honest way of working had made a good impression on the Noida officials, though it also surprised some staff who surmised that he would not continue for long. They were proved right. On the morning of August 3, Mr Vinode Malhotra got the news of his transfer.
