Panel to manage gurdwaras sought Ambala, July 20 Another resolution passed at the conclave urged the Punjab government to complete the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal at the earliest so that farmers in Haryana get irrigation facilities. The Punjab government must honour the Supreme Court verdict of January this year and water must flow in the SYL, canal the resolution said. Convened by Jathedar Kartar Singh Takkar, Organising Secretary of the All-India Shiromani Akali Dal, 500 delegates from all over the State advocated not only an independent body to manage 24 historic Sikh gurdwaras in the state but also wanted hand in managing their religious affairs in the proposed All-India Gurdwara Bill, 1999. Among the main speakers were Mr Harbans Singh Dachar, Mr Jagdish Singh Jindha, Mr Nawab Singh Singhra, Mr Didar Singh Habri, Mr Balwinder Singh Randhawa, Mr Jarnail Singh Akrana, Jathedar Joga Singh, Mr Harbhajan Singh Josh, Mr Harpal Singh Palli, Dr Pritam Singh Panjokhra and Col (retd) K.S. Thawamajri Jathedar Kartar Singh Takkar presided over the conclave. The speakers held that after Punjab, Haryana had the highest Sikh population and as such it should be granted independent status in the new Gurdwara Act. “It would be discriminatory to club Haryana with Punjab while granting independent status to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan , Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and even Maharashtra.” “It is not only the Sikh population, but even the number of historic Sikh gurdwaras which is far more than many states which are being granted the independent status,” said the speakers. A resolution adopted by the executive committee of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras Managing Committee at a meeting at Kurukshetra early this month was also endorsed at the conclave. The committee already has represented its case before Justice K.S. Tiwana, Chairman of the Review Committee of the Sikh Gurdwaras Bill, 1999. A similar representation has also been given to the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Mr Kirpal Singh Badungar. The speakers also wanted that a statewide campaign be launched to create awakening among Sikhs of the State regarding the demand for a separate managing committee for historic gurdwaras in the state. All offerings, donations and collections in historic gurdwaras from Haryana are taken away by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and very little is ploughed back for upkeep, maintenance and provision of more facilities in the historic shrines. Even the SGPC was not very responsive to the demands of the Sikhs of Haryana for opening technical institutions in Haryana, including medical and engineering colleges, for the benefit of Sikh children of Haryana. “Once we have our own managing committee, we would be able to do a lot more not only on the educational front but also in certain other grey areas, including healthcare, looking after senior citizens, destitutes, widows and other needy sections of society,” Jathedar Takkar said. It was decided that the demand for independent stauts to Haryana should be pursued vigorously till it was conceded. |
