Shifting of PGI enquiry leaves people puzzled

This is the shifting of a public facility lock, stock and barrel, PGI style. One fine day, it was decided that the decades-old enquiry counter of the PGI, visited daily by more than a thousand people, be shifted to another destination without informing anyone.

Property transfer cases pile up

About 300 cases relating to the transfer of plots and houses are awaiting clearance at the PUDA Estate Office here with the authorities stating that the transfer of property under the earlier policy has now been stopped.

A landlord owning a commercial building in Sector 46 has been booked for theft of power which was being allegedly consumed by his tenants, all because the power connection is supposed to be in his own name.

Man’s body found
Chandigarh, June 12
In less than a fortnight, yet another unidentified man was found murdered on a vacant plot between Mauli Jagron colony and the railway station here this morning. The victim was believed to be hit on face with some heavy object and his right ear was also found partially damaged.

Safety awareness programme held
SAS Nagar, June 12
A safety awareness programme was organised by the local police in Phase VIII here today. Under the programme reflectors were got fixed on a large number of vehicles like autorickshaws, tractor- trailers, school buses, trucks and rickshaws. This was being done under the instructions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

BJP seeks higher power share

The local unit of the BJP has demanded from the Union Power Minister, Mr Suresh P. Prabhu, 3.5 per cent of power share out of the Bhakra Beas Management Board pool of electricity.

Religious fervour marks nagar kirtan

Devotees marched through city streets during the nagar kirtan held today to observe the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev. The procession started from Ram Darbar, Phase I, and concluded at Sector 23 gurdwara after passing through Tribune Chowk, Sector 29 market, Sector 30, Sector 28, Sector 27, Sector 20 ,Sector 21and Sector 22.

Plot holders resent PUDA’s decision
SAS Nagar, June 12
A number of plot allottees, who were issued completion certificates by the estate office of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority in December 2000, have expressed resentment over the decision of the authorities to charge extension fee from the plot holders without examining each case.

Dr Virat Dhir is no more
Chandigarh, June 12
Dr Virat Chand Dhir, the city’s oldest and perhaps seniormost and most respected consultant in dentistry, died at Fortis Institute following an unsuccessful heart surgery this afternoon. He was 66.

Rehri-owners booked for creating chaos
Panchkula, June 12
The police today arrested nine rehari-owners under Section 283 of the IPC for creating congestion in Sector 7 here.
Hari Prasad, Ram Bhulaya and Shalesh Kumar of Mauli Jagran, Sunil, Roda and Salim of Indira Colony in Chandigarh, Ashok Kumar of Sector 15 of Panchkula, Dawod and Dheerpal of Bapu Dham colony, Chandigarh, were arrested for creating chaos in the Sector 7 market by parking their mango-laden rehris.

Woman hospitalised with 40 pc burns
SAS Nagar, June 12
A young married woman sustained burn injuries after an attempt on her life in Sohana village, near here, today. According to the police, the victim, Kulwinder Kaur, was rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, with about 40 per cent burn injuries.

Red Cross units mooted in colleges

Red Cross units will be set up in colleges in association with NSS cadets in Punjab to carry out Red Cross activities across the state. This was stated by Dr C.L. Narang, Director NSS, Panjab University, while addressing a meeting of the secretaries of the district Red Cross branches of Punjab held here today.

DTC seeks release of Lahore bus

Reacting to the attachment order of the Lahore bus (in which Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had visited Lahore in 1999), passed by a local court recently, the DTC authorities today moved a plea seeking release orders of the bus.

‘Unsafe injection practices claim 21 million victims every year’
Chandigarh, June 12
Scientists have finally come up with a solution to the problem of deadly infections spread by recycled syringes: auto-disable syringes.
It has been hailed as a major technological breakthrough in the history of medical devices as auto-disable syringe cannot be reused after the first use and any attempt to reuse the syringe leads to the breaking of the plunger.
